E39 MKIII - Restarting Intermittenly

Hi.

I have an E39 MKIII running on SW 3-1/63 for the past two years without any issues, recently the Sat Nav has started to restart/reboot intermittently. Which means that if I'm listening to the radio or using the Sat Nav is shuts down and reboot to the logo screen and slowly picks up where it last drop off.

I have successfully updated the OS with V32 and now my Sat Nav is showing SW 3-1/64, also have tried the latest V16 maps for Australian but the problem still continue.

Does anyone here have any ideas what could be the problem or any suggestions on how to resolve this issue.

On another note - Since going to 3-1/64 and using the V16 maps, I have notice that the time it takes to "Generate Maps" is much longer and SW 3-1/63 V13 maps.

Anyone else experience or notice the same thing?

3-1/64 is not an official version, AFAIK.

So first go back to an official BMW version

Then make sure you are using original map discs.

then if the problem still occurs, replace the laser (most likely cause)

A old worn weak laser generates lots of read errors which can crash the nav, and cause very slow map reading

A new laser makes a world of difference.

Thanks for the quick response Jochen.

What is the cost for a new laser and would be it straight forward to replace for someone with little skills? Ie Me.

i had this problem after changing map discs. Did you change yours? I found that if i burnt using different media, or slower it works just fine.

but as i say, that was caused by a bad disc. if you haven't changed yours then i cant help, sorry

No changes.

Jochen - suggested it could be a laser unit. Jumping on ebay now to check out the prices for a new laser or going to a MKV instead.
