E65 7er Sat Nav - Same as other MKIV?

I beleive the boot mounted sat nav dvd drive in an E65 is the MKIV, but with different connections on the back (MOST system). One of the companys that sells nav and OS discs has said the same discs will work on the 7er. Is he correct?

I've got the discs that I used on my MK4 to add speed camera alerts so can i put them straigt in the 7 series?

You can use the same map and OS disks, but the computers have nothing else in common.

The E65/E66 uses the NAVI01, NAVI02, and NAVI03 computers. They are totally different from a MKIV nav computer. The NAVIxx does use the same map disks and gets the OS loaded from the same OS loader disk as the MKIV, but that is all they have in common. Under the covers, they are radically different-- much more than just the connectors.

Your map disks with the speed camers will work in a MKIV and any E65/E66 NAVI01/02/03.

The NAVI01 is a reworked Mk3 - look at the graphics, and the speed. You can recognize the Mk3 when you know it...

The NAVI02 and NAVI03 are reworked Mk4s - again, the graphics are almost identical to the Mk4 graphics, just the menu layout is different.

And the nav is physically very similar, just with different interfaces 8MOST instead of ibus & video)

So very similar is some respects, and different in others.

Doesn't change the fact mine wont read DVD's

Going to try to get hold of an original BMW DVD before i fork out and buy my own copy.

I could almost agree, but there is one massive architectural difference between the MKIII/MKIV and the NAVI01/02/03. The MKxx nav computer are the central brains of the entire nav-A/V system. They expect to be the primary graphics driver and integration controller of the entire system, and all other components feed their video display requests to the MKxx. By major contrast, the NAVIxx is a subordinate component in the system. The iDrive computer is the central brains of the system and it coordinates all other components. The NAVIxx responds to commands from the iDrive computer and only feeds its map display to the screen. It does not communicate with any other components like the MKxx computers. You could argue that the NAVIxx is architecturally similar to a MKI; because the MKI is a subordinate component to the video module, and in that system, the MV is the central brains of the whole system.

So, I guess you could say that some of the core GPS components might be similar between the MKxx and NAVIxx systems, but little else. I think that the reason that the two systems appear visually similar is that they were designed from the same high-level user interface specification. Even the totally different DDD systems in the other iDrive cars looks similar to the NAVIxx displays; however they are even more divergent than the NAVxx from the MKxx architecture.

It didn't work

Used a standard v32 disc. Update went fine. Got to the point where it asked me to remove the update CD and press 'OK'

After i tried inserting a single layer 2010 DVD, dual layer 2009 DVD but it wouldn't read either off them. But still reads the original 2003 CD

Any ideas? The drive is defo a MK4 and has DVD stamped on the front of it.
