MKIV E39 M5 - intermittent white screen

Hi, I have a 2000 MY E39 M5 and I have retrofitted a MKIV NAV and 16:9 screen a while back. These have worked for years, but recently, I started getting a full bright white screen.

It looks like this - all phosphors lit:

The radio continues to work and I think the NAV is working, but I can't easily tell since I do not know if I can get it to do anything without seeing what I am doing.

It will go white for a day at a time or so and then sometimes it will be back to working after parking the car for a while. I would really like to solve the problem if anyone has any clues.

Do you have the TV module? If so, try moving the blue connector from the TV module to the nav module. This will cause the RGB signals to be generated and displayed from the nav.

This could help indicate a faulty TV module.

I don't think I have the TV module - I have never seen the option come up in the computer. I will try swapping the NAV computer with another one tomorrow if I get my other car with NAV back from the shop.

My car was upgraded from MKI, so I am not sure I have a TV module - it is a 2000. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you have a Mk2 nav it could be the nav drive failling

Otherwise, it's the screen failling

DVD MK4 Nav

Jochen:

It is a DVD mk4 unit. So your guess would be the screen. Hmm - is it just the LCD or the whole unit? Where could I get the LCD if it is just that?

hard to say, I would guess it is the electronics driving the LCD.

Easiest is to swap with a known good screen and test it

First of course, try the usual: check seating and cleanliness of all connectors, especially on nav (water damage). Focus on the blue plug - it delivers video to the screen.

Thanks...

I will definitely check the blue connector and clean up anything that looks like it might be corrosion if I see stuff. The case of the DVD has some tell-tale chalky white discoloration on the outside. If it reverts to white (it has been back to happy map mode the last few days), then I will pop it out and clean up the board. I am decent with a soldering iron and have a temp control iron I could use if there are some bad traces.
