Will I be able to back up a new 2011 nav dvd?

Hi all, learned a lot here and have updated my firmware with this new found knowledge. I have an MkIV (v31 with night mode) with 2002.1 OEM nav disc and I was able to burn a backup using imgburn. It worked no problem. I have been reading about the problems with reading 2011 nav discs, both OEM and backups. As a test, I downloaded the 2010 HIGH and the 2011 HIGH iso's and burned them. These did not work as backups. The 2011 caused the nav to say something like "reading disc, please wait a moment", but that moment lasted over 20 min before I gave up. The 2010 was not even readable by the nav. I burned using slowest possible on my laptop (4X) and used single layer memorex discs. Again, I was able to backup my 2002.1 OEM no problem. My concern is that when I buy the 2011 OEM I won't be able to back it up. I don't wish to use the original in my car.

Any ideas?

Probably not. Many of the MKIV nav computers have difficulty reading copied DVD map disks. Some are perfectly fine, but if yours won't read a copy already, odds are that yours won't work.

Thanks Brian, I was wondering if maybe it was because the slowest I'm able to write is 4x with a single layer disc. If I use a dual layer I can write slower at 2.4x. Maybe I will try that.

I can not make a backup work on mine. I am a computer wiz, and I have tried multiple types of media, burners, software, and speeds. Nothing works reliably on mine. Plus, I have seen a lot of posts like yours. Either BMW throttled-down the laser so that it won't reliably read copies, or it is just a weak laser. It will work great forever with an original disk.

Ok, thanks again. I tried one more 2009 file I found and used a dual layer. Again, no go. If the BMW laser doesn't like copies then I'm curious why I can use my backed up 2002.1 disc without issue?

I have my mkIV with v32 and night mode (self modded) the unit is manufactured 2008 and so far all copies from original dvds or from downloaded images are working good. I worked so far with high 2009; 2009 - update 2 (am I correct or was it another version?) and the last 2010 update. I added my own POIs and still ok.
I use verbatim DVD, burn with ImgBurn, at the beginning I did at the slowest speed but it took so long time, so I now burn at 2/4 speed and it works good (touching wood).
I believe it could be a firmware issue related to the unit or a little bit older lens.

i've seen a few MK4 have problems reading certain burned DVDs. some of the time, the problem is remedied by using high quality DVD+R media (not DVD-R) with a slow burn speed and a decent DVD burner. some other times, you're just out of luck.

the unit in my car is a 2005 prod date and reads everything i've given it, even really low quality burns. i was just helping someone with a MK4 upgrade using a 2007 prod date unit, and it wouldn't take one of the burned DVDs that worked in my 2005 unit.

YMMV, but I would at least try a DVD+R from Taiyo Yuden at a slow burn speed and see if that works.
