DSP Disappeared
I don’t know if I have posted this in the correct section but here goes, after the car had stood for two weeks when on holiday I came back to find the battery dead, did the battery disconnect procedure and re charged and re connected, I now have no sound from any of the equipment, sat nav, radio, tv or cd player, the DSP has disappeared from the menu, I have since disconnected the battery again and re set everything but still no DSP showing, I have checked the connections and they appear to be ok and no signs of water etc, checked the fuses including the one under the plug on the BM unit, the sat nav functions ok but no sound, the radio stations can be selected but no sound and the same with the cd player so do you think it would be a faulty amp or the BM unit. |

It could actually be the battery. If the battery is not 100% charged or has a bad cell, it will cause symptoms like this. The car will start fine, but the electrical components can do odd things.
Since you say it happened after you had a dead battery, I would look there first. Try to put it on a charger. Get it tested. You may end up having to replace the battery.

Hi Brian
Thanks for the info, have had the battery tested and all ok, i'am thinking the amp may have blown when i tried to start it with the flat battery and low voltage, is it possible DSP has lost its code and the i bus is not seeing it on the system. |

DSP amps rarely fail due to a flat battery. Additionally, DSP amps rarely lose their coding as well. That said, nothing is impossible, and you could have had a coincidental event.
The early DSP amps made by Philips did have some failure issues, but those were discontinued in 1998. I can't tell the year and model of your car, but I assume that it is newer than 1998. Additionally, if your car is newer than 2002, it would have a new generation BM53 or BM54 radio module. Your symptom of the DSP option disappearing is known occurrence in cars with a bad battery and a new gen radio. If it is not the battery, then the next most likely failure is the DSP amp. If the radio audio output had failed, you would still have the DSP option on the menu.

IT's a 2003 so based on your info i will get the amp looked at, is it a viable repair or would i be better replacing with new, i see on flea bay there are people offering repairs to the amps.

I have not read of anyone who does DSP amp repairs. The best bet is to buy a used one from eBay. Just look for one of the newer models made by Lear. After you get it installed, you will need to get it coded unless you know for certain that it cam to a car just like yours (same model and A/V/nav features).

You have checked the fuses for the radio equipment? As Brian says, the DSP is a fairley robust unit but the fact that its not in the menu list means that the ibus (on the dsp) is not responding, this will make the system have no sounds as its wired for DSP (chicken and egg mate).
Check all the fuses that you can find and then have a look for a replacement DSP unit.

Thanks for all your advice, tested every thing out and came to the conclusion it was the amp that had failed, purchased a new one and got it coded and everything is working fine again, now on to my next problem, sat nav re booting. Once again that’s for all your help.

Dealer or specialized mechanic with a BMW or similar diagnostics system.
