'02 X5 w/Nav Mk3 to Mk4 Upgrade

I have an '02 X5 3.0 with factory navigation (Mk3). I believe the vehicle is 11/01 production. The nav is acting a little odd and the dealer said they would replace it and upgrade it to the Mk4 (as I am still under factory warranty). Now the service advisor is saying that the Mk4 will NOT work as the wiring is different or the systems will not communicate and that it has to be the CD-based version. Does this sound correct? They said they emailed BMW. I'm sure I've read about 2002 X5's being upgraded from Mk3 to Mk4 just by swapping the "drive unit". I also spoke to one of the tech's and he wasn't sure. I called another dealer and spoke to their parts department and asked teh same question. They said they couldn't find any documention saying that you could simply pop in a Mk4 drive into a 2002 X5. Maybe it's only for later production 02's or just not a Certified BMW "upgrade".

It's a plug-n-play direct swap. Takes all of 5 minutes to do. I did this on my 2001 X5 a couple years ago, so I speak from direct experience (and many many others have done this as well)

Interesting

I have the same model X5 and my nav screen was acting weird also. They replaced it with another system. How do I know which version they replaced it with?

Drive says DVD on it.

If you flip open the panel that hides the drive rack in the back left of the cargo area, you will see a slot-loading drive. If it says DVD on it, it's a Mk4.

Yes, as long as you have a 2004 or newer radio module.

The radio module is the unit just to the left of what the yellow arrow is pointing to on the picture below (the arrow points to where the video module is located, if equipped). This is down in the spare tire well in the back of the vehicle.

Highly unlikely that it is a 2004+ unit unless your X5 is a 2004 or newer or you replaced it yourself. You may have to remove the module and look at the sticker on the side to see what the build date was in order to be certain.

Apparently, my dealer did not actually try to replace the drive. He simply went to BMW and they said it is not a covered procedure - ie bad CD drive (Mk3) gets swapped with a new DVD drive (Mk4). Standard operating procedure on an X5 appears to swap like for like, unlike on the 7 Series where the upgrade to DVD is SOP. Anyone seen other than this?
