BMW E53 Lockout Entry Instructions
E53 BMW X5 Key Lockout Instructions

Do not, and I repeat DO NOT, break a window in order to get into a BMW X5 E53 that has a lock-out issue.

From an engineering and design perspective, it is remarkably simple to get into the E53 X5 without a key. Most towing services have what is called a 'lockout kit', which is comprised of 3 things (similar to this - Lockout Kit).

1. a hard plastic wedge
2. an inflatible bladder
3. a long plastic coated metal rod that is bendable

Here's how you get in if you have battery power but have locked your keys in the vehicle:

- Go to either of the front doors and insert the plastic wedge up top between the door and the body.

- insert the inflatible bladder next to the opening made by the wedge and inflate the bladder. This will create enough room to insert the metal rod.

- insert the metal rod and maneuver it over to the center console and press down on the lock/unlock button.

- Presto, the vehicle is open. After you have done it once, you'll see that it takes all of about 30 seconds to do this, and it leaves no trace of how you did it.


Now, let's assume that you do not have power to the vehicle. In this case pressing the lock/unlock button in the center console isn't going to do any good. So here is how to get around that little dilema:

Option 1:

- You can apply power to the electrical system by connecting a 12v source to the starter on the bottom of the engine. Then you can unlock the car with your remote and replace the battery. There is an access panel under the engine that provides just enough space to get some power leads onto the terminal post and apply a 12V power source. Apply 12v(+) from another battery, etc. to the front (+) terminal on the starter and apply your neg(-) to the frame. Once power is supplied, you should be able to use your remote to unlock the vehicle

Option 2:

- Also with the theory of connecting a 12v power source to the vehicle, if you have the OEM trailer hitch installed on your vehicle then you can try connecting a 12v battery source to that. The connections you want to make are the pin at 1 o'clock position for the postive (hot) and the pin at 7 o'clock position for the negative (ground).

Option 3:

- Using a lock-out kit described above, go to the drivers side front door and insert the plastic wedge up top between the door and the body. You need to do this as far to the front as you can. Don't worry, this will not harm your vehicle.

- insert the inflatable bladder next to the opening made by the wedge (to the front of the car) and inflate the bladder. This will create enough room to insert the metal rod. Again, this will not hurt your vehicle.

- insert the metal rod and maneuver it down along the foot kick panel and catch the hood release and pull. This isn't going to be easy, but it can be done. I know because I've had to do it a couple of times. Be patient, you will get it.

- Once the hood has released, open the hood and put a battery tender or jumper cables on the positive terminal (look for a red cap on the firewall on the driver's side and flip it down - attach there) and negative terminal (on the driver's side shock tower).

- With power to the vehicle you should be able to now use your remote to unlock it and get inside.



Obviously you aren't going to walk around with a lockout kit handy, so your best bets are (1) hide a spare key somewhere under the vehicle where only you need to know where it is in case of an emergency, or (2) call a towing service and ask if they have a lockout kit and they will do what I have described above to get into the vehicle.
