This can seriously go down. Initial quantity for group buy would be about 50-75 people. This would work on all e53 4.4s and 3.0s. Price would be about 100-200 dollars. These would be backlit, and not just aluminum overlays.

Example of how they will probably look. Same picture as was in the last post for the group buy.

Please start adding names, if you are interested.

I have confirmed with the producer and this will happen if we get enough people. These are the actuall numbers. If we get 75, they garounteed that we will get them for under 150, closer to 100.

We had 4 or 5 interested. I needed at least 10-20 to get it going. If you can round up some people it can still happen. There doesnt seem to be a large enough market for them.

i'm in, what about the white needles, they are red/orange on the is models, it might be hard to see white against grey.

serbstyle1 11-25-2006 05:11 AM

I think that thats how the 4.6 is, im not sure though. the needles would not be changed though.

You guys should start telling more people about this if we want to get this started. We are a long way away from 50-75 people.

Are they easy to install?

serbstyle1 11-25-2006 10:55 PM

Yes. You remove your cluster, open the plastic casing off of the front. Remove the needles. Stick the gauges straight on top of the old ones, wire it into one of the factory harnesses, which will be in the instructions, and then replace the needles. Replacing the needles is the most important part, because you have to mark exactly where the needle was so that you return them in the right position. Place the glass back on and thats it.

Many electronic shops and car audio installation shops will be able to do this for you, at a small cost.

You have to be very very careful when removing the needles, as there is a highly wound spring soldered to the needles which is extremly difficult to remove without poping the spring, and rendering the needles and cluster useless. I have a few BMW cluster that I took apart to do some mods on when I had an e39 540 and, removing the needles is something that an expert needs to do. I even have a set of red M5 needles that I removed to install on my 540 but when I went to remove the needles the spring popped so it put me off touching the original cluster.

I agree with you, it's a very delicate process. I tried doing this with my E38 and to make a long story short, I had to purchase another cluster to replace the one I screwed up.

any updates on the group buy?

j0nblayz 01-14-2008 05:55 PM

very bad idea to remove the needles, i was doing the grey overlay on my 4.4i, removed the temp needle, and the spring popped out, i finally got the needle back in, but took forever to get the right spot, would always be a little off, so the second time i took off the needle, the spring broke, had to fabricate my own spring.. not worth it, and the worst part was, i ended up taking out the overlay, i liked the black better afterwards with the chrome rings..

Bimmer360 01-15-2008 12:28 PM

i agree with jonblayz, just like him, i have removed the needles on my temp, and spring popped up. I was able to move it to right spot, but the needles goes up to 11 O' clock only.
