Strong-Struts Stut Bar

Hey Gang -

Just trying to get a head count for those that may be interested in a strut brace for your X. Pricing will be approx $400 for a complete strut unit with the decorative machined holes included. Finish will be black or possibly powdercoated silver. Please drop me a PM or EMAIL so I can start keeping track on a excel spreadsheet. It's MUCH easier than wading through 50 different thread responses. Ideally, I'm shooting for a target of 15 peeps but the more the merrier as pricing reflects the # of struts commited.

NOTE - Struts will have to be pre-paid in full and the vendor commits to deliver within 30 days from the time of payment.

lol same here

As of today, there have only been 3 people that were interested in joining this group buy. I will let this thread run another 1.5 weeks . If there are not enough interested parties for a production run, I will just cancel this.

JUst thinking outloud but if I was able to get this pricepoint LOWERED down to $365, would there by anyone else interested in this group buy ? I have yet to ask the vendor .......

Will it have X5 on it like the Z3?

JPuma 01-04-2006 10:19 AM

Can these be installed by ourself? meaning I dont need to get a wheel alignment or use need a lift or take off tires?

yes, piece of cake to install it. just remove the 3 strut tower nuts on top, put the bar on and put the 3 strut tower nuts back on and torque to 18 ft-lbs.

on the passenger side, just remove 2 10mm nuts to move the winshield washer resevior out of the way while you work on the strut bar.. after that, put it back in, hand tight...

should be 15 mins of work really...

That Z3 logo is just the emblem off the car, so I assume you can just order a set for the X5 from the dealer.

Hopefully, Strong-Strut can design a bar that doesn't need modification to the washer resevior!

What if you already have camber plates installed? Will they affect the installation procedure or are they not even associated with this...?

chefwong 01-06-2006 12:16 AM

We're still at 4 orders including me . At the rate the response level is going, I don't think we will make the minimum production run.

Just a bump for this thread. I will close this thread in 1.5 weeks from now if there's no one else that's interested. The vendor has advised that to get the pricepoint of $365, we would need 25 orders.

what modification are you talking about? its just moving the resevoir out of the way then putting it back...

ALL work on the left front strut requires this... including the installation of the dinan bar, free camber adjustments, camber plate installs, and service to the front struts should it ever need to be replaced...

this is a design flaw of bmw... they put it in an area that doesn't make sense...

if you have the camber plates installed, then that means you have no alignment pin to maintain the location of the front struts once the top nuts are loosened or removed. chances are you will not need an alignment but the camber plate could move more in once those nuts are loosened. however, if you have yours set at max negative camber, then there is no place for the camber plate to slide anymore since you are at the extreme inside... just remove the nuts and add the bar if thats the case...

if your camber is not at max negative, i would recommend having an alignment check once you do it... you may not need to have anything adjusted, but just in case since there is a possibility that it moved...

According to Dinan's instructions, it states that some shaving to the plastic trims around the washer fluid resevoir is required to clear the brace.

you gotta remember that dinan also cut the frame out of a z8 to make the m5 headers fit.... and thereby destroying the car.. gotta love them dinan engineers...

all kidding aside, this is a good question.. gotta get chefwong to ask strong strut how they handle the windshield fluid resevoir in the way...

I haven't really pressed Strong Stuts on design as the interest in the stut bars has been very low. A whopping 4 interested parties ! Suffice to say, this group buy is cancelled.

So far I'm 0-2 <g>. Rac wheels and the strut bars.

Alan it was a good try on your part. Too bad I already have both of them otherwise I'm in. What's going on with your HREs?

chefwong 01-15-2006 07:56 PM

The wheels are back at HRE for some R&R. After 2 years....I sent them back to get them back to spec !

BTW......I'm adding aftermarket tire pressure monitors on them when before I put the tars on. Don't know how bad the roads are around you way , but I've had my fair share of flats, etc. So instead of me doing the methodical onceover and checking the tire pressue about once a week......I did say methodical :) , I'll be adding a tire pressure monitor on them. The NICE thing is that you can set the trigger at whatever pressue you live, and I'm going to have it trigger if it hits 30lbs or below.

Check it out - http://www.smartire.com/products/passenger/index.html

breytonX5 01-16-2006 03:51 PM

Excellent idea on the tire pressure monitors, Alan. Let us know how they're working out.
