I think there is a wide range of old and new. On our property, I can see landscaping that we put in less than two years ago, and since none of it is in bloom the photo is likely one year old, give or take 3 months.

Terminology here, but magnification is better the closer you get, while resolution is the same, so the overall photo quality drops. :)

It is still amazing, IMO.

Since all the satellite shots are at different resolutions, it is worth cruising around and finding a very high resolution shot, such as the Google campus.

as for the length of time they have been taken its less than a year and a half as i can make out the wife's bmw convertable

Well aware of that. My point was directed more to what technology the gov't Sat's must have. Probably getting pretty close to coming into your bedroom to watch you sleep...
