RIP VW Phaeton

I just read an article in the Feb. issue of Car and Driver today that the Phaeton will no longer be sold in the US after the 2006 model year. However it will continue to be sold in the rest of the world. I'm not totally surprised as VW made a bad calculation in going upmarket. :tsk:

All they had to do is remove the VW name and they would have been good to go. It is still a nice ride.

I agree. Sales have been very disappointing here with fewer than 1000 units sold. Good thing VW still has the Bently GT and Flying Spur being produced in their ultramodern Dresden plant.

A shame - really a nice car - weird...

I read that too. Everybody knew this would happen when they released. Why would anyone pay over $80k for a VW? And then take to VW dealer for service where the other people bring their beater Jettas. What were they thinking.

The Phaeton is the same as the Audi A8; but way cheaper. It's like comparing a 350z to G35.

It really is all about the badge - I agree.

In northern Toronto, there's a place where there is a Benz and VW dealership next door.

They were trying so hard to sell Phaetons that they had propped one up on each of the 3 glass walls of the VW building. That way any customer in the Benz building would see it.

I agree, it's all about the badge...+ they don't need to go luxury, they have Audi for that.

Too much money for a hopped up Passat :)

But seriously, why is VW trying to hit a high end market? Nissan made Infiniti, Toyota got Lexus and Honda decided on Acura....heck even Ford went ahead and got Aston Martin and Jaguar. I think VW is trying to go down a path that will eventually lead to a loss.
