I am looking for a new radar detector. Any suggestions?

If money is no object... I think you are going to get overwhelming praise for Valentine. You can do you own reading at http://www.radartest.com/

I have a hardwired Passport 8500 and it has saved my butt a few times in the last several years. As jaba said, many contend the v1 is the way to go. No matter what you use, you can't blindly rely on it. You will have to learn how to use it as a sixth sense.

V1 with an S1 (StealthOne) all the way
|
V1 and awarness of where I am and how I am driving.
|
Valentine hands down... can't afford it? Save for it... best detector out there and what I'm saving for.

v1
|
Here is a comparison, as you will find.....once you get in the $300.00+ range...detectors are pretty much equal and open to individual preference.

Nyc Area
I gennerally drive in the NYC area.
The only time I got stopped is with a detector. The cop was behind we at night and when the detector sounded his lights went on. I wonder if he would of stopped me if I did not have the detector? In general I have found that the detectors give to many false alarms. The only one I would consider is a hidden unit. |

i have a cobra 360 degrees is really good
|
radar detectors is a waste of money!just drive responsible!:)
|
Am I missing something
|
V1 with S1 here, too.
My V1 is hardwired and mounted on the windshield, just to the right of the rear view mirror. |
Hard mount, whats the point
If you have to mount the V1 on the windshield what is the point of the other unit?
|
V1 with Stealth one second that one.

But you can still see the V1
I still don't get it, if a cop can still see the V1 what do you gain?

Solution: tint rear window :) |
I think the cops will see it.
I think the cops will see it and you are more likely to get stopped.
I think you are better off running naked. I have driven for many years since that stopped and don't use a detector. In traffic I gennerally go as fast as the flow will allow. If alone I go posted plus nine unless someone else wants to lead the way. |

note: my cousin who is in the NYPD says "I couldn't care less if anyone has a detector or not, if you're speeding you get a ticket, if you're not speeding I ignore you, radar detector or not" . Obviously that's just 1 man's opinion, but telling everyone to not use a detector because you feel that you were pulled over for owning 1 is a little too short sighted in my opinion. |
Almost every driver speeds
The speed limit in the NYC area is generally 50 or 55.
The speed limit on most highways should be increased to 65 or 70! A unsafe driver is the one who switches lanes all the time. I was taught that the left lane was the "fast lane", however in NY people don't care and cause others to go around. The cops should tickets the jerks doing 55 in the fast lane! That said almost every driver is speeding. The cop therefore has his pick of speeders. Conclusion: What and how you drive makes a big difference. I think if he sees the detector you or more likely to be stopped. |

That's not unique to NY, every state has that problem. Drive in NJ or CA for a bit and you'll be happy to get back to NYC. That being said, I still don't understand your paranoia about getting stopped for having a detector in NY, they are legal here. I socialize with a lot of cops, both Nassau County and NYPD and none of them have ever said that they pull people over for having detectors any more or less than peope without them. In fact, they state quite the opposite, they don't care. I'm curious, where were you when you got pulled over? Did the officer say that you being in possession of a detector had any bearing on him pulling you over or is that an assumption by you? |
Why I was stopped
I was going west on the LIE out in eastern Suff.
It was late at night and I was all buy my self. The cop came out of no where, bing the dector went off and a min latter his light went on. I was doing about 69, he wrote it for 72. I think the ticket was all about making money. I also think he saw the lights on the detector. I may of been dead in anycase. The other day in NYC was doing 65 in 50 I saw the cop I my mirror and slowed down. I think if the cop saw the detector, he may of pulled me over. In general I don't think the detector helps much with lazer and instant on. |
radar detector or not, it's not good to speed in Suffolk. They have more speed traps out there than any place i've ever driven, and I agree, it's an income generation scheme for the towns. Around Exit 51 there is always a trap. (I have family out in the Stony Brook area, i put the cruise on the vette on 55 as soon as I hit the Nassau/Suffolk border, I take no chances)

Suff Speeding
I drive to eastern suff all the time.
The Cops on the LIE are bad but you have so many drivers speeding the odds are low. Once I get to Sunrise I set my cruise controll to 63. This eastern section has state cops that really are in the speed trap game. You can always find a cop at Westhampton and another in the bushes before Hampton Bays (east bound). The Hampton Bays trap is really bad since its after a big hill and you are tired. In the summer it much easer, some city slicker will always be driving fast and not having local knowllege, they keep the cops away from me (I hope). |

Not legal in Va.
|
Do they really help
Given instant on and lazer do they really help?
|
They help greatly. If laser is used on any vehicle in front of you, you will get a signal alerting you to slow down. Now if you are the only vehicle on the road, best bet is to keep your eyes open.

Where can you get V1 with S1?
|
I hear all this hype about V1 - how is it better than any other detector. I've read about the front-rear sensors etc, does that really matter? Radar/Lazer bounce off of everything around you anyway. And if you are the only car on the road, then nothing helps.
Who "really" knows about these - what do they do that others don't? |
v1 = v1 site
S1 = jaric design or through the vendors. Quote:

range is significant better than the passports. On drives down I5, we had alerts from a little over a mile away that that v1 can detect (Ka) The arrows are nice.. knowing where the last radar/lidar came from. Another advantage is V1 supports POP now. Of course if you are the only car on the road, you're screwed.

OIC, that makes since. So many pepole swear by it, there had to be something. thanks for the info.

one month ago a x5 owner has been busted using a radar detector, police wanted to pound the x5 for the state, lukely in court he won. But when police bust him again within 3years he has to pay couple of thousands of euros and looses his car.
my question now..are there detectors that can't be detected by police? |
The V1 has metal casing that shields the RF emission - most detectors are "superhethorodine" receivers, in other words, they detect certain harmonics within the specific range (X, K, KA), convert the received signal into a fixed internal frequency and then amplify it and presents to the user. The VSS unit that cops in DC and VA are using to detect the detectors are tuned to the internal frequency that the detectors use and emit. V1 does not leak RF (funny, it picks up bogeys from rear, gaining and then passing, and all you see is a pickup or a Camry or something else with a non-V1 detector on the windshield that passes you). V1 mounted at the top right portion of the windshield and a remote display tucked in the lower left of the windshield is an alternative to S1. In this set up, you would need to have a remote volume/power switch installed somewhere handy to control the power. Someone told me years ago - once you drive a BMW, you will not want to drive anything else. This is my 4th bimmer... I can say this - once you use V1 (with or without the S1), you will not want to use anything else. I own 2 V1s in my two daily drivers, both hard wired. The V1's receiving circuitry is far better in design that some of the other ones. However, regardless of the technology, this is just a tool - the man behind the machine should decide what is a threat and what is not. Other thing that I might suggest is CarChip from Davis Labs - it plugs into the OBD II port and keeps track of your speed as reported by the car - you might be able to prove to the judge that you were going at X MPH when you were pulled over. Or judge will ignore you anyway.. :)
