Anyone watching Winter Olympics?

Ok it's slow tonight and the Winter Olympics are on. Am I the only one watching it?

DINANM3 02-10-2006 09:49 PM

yes but thats ok

motordavid 02-10-2006 09:59 PM

Veronica is...she is an OlyJunkette.
Looks nice in HD on the 60", though.

We had a nice '95 Z-H Trimbach reisling with a grouper dindin cooked on the grill by yours truly, this eve...
I gotta chase the ball in our 2nd round of club Match Play tomorrow at 8:00. One more glass of vino and I may regret it, lol!

Nice MD.....nothing beats chasing the ball. Yeah I'm an Olympic junky too. Summer and winter.

Have fun tomorrow!! :)

JV 02-10-2006 10:08 PM

Got it fired up in HD...nice!

No fan of the winter Olympics, but I did flip the channel to check out what's happening. I can see its in HD, but it doesn't seem as clear and breathtaking as other HD sports programming. Anyone else notice this?

Yeah, and the sound is suffering too. I can only assume it's the equipment they used to tape the earlier live events. You lose a "generation" from live to tape, and possibly during playback another generation is lost. It's like an onion: each layer that's peeled off makes the onion smaller.

JV

BTW...that torch-lighting was bad-ass!!!

twm67 02-11-2006 01:05 AM

I was actually falling asleep...

Until the Ferrari F1 car lit it up with donuts at the Olympics...

A little out of place, of course, but I'm a sucker for all things F1...

Also - funny how the cameras kept seeking out hottie after hottie.:excited:

Thanks Phong!
Played ok, but good enough to get by my opponent: 2 & 1
I'm in the club Match Play semi-finals now, but the comp. is stiff.

Gee, I miss the snow on the Mtn, not!

(I haven't picked up a golf clubs in about 3 years. Yes like does suck for me :(.)

Scottie 02-11-2006 03:36 PM

Nope not watching. However I will be watching the curling as that's my sport.:) :)

rayxi 02-11-2006 04:34 PM

Jennifer Heil just won Gold in moguls. :woot:
It quite entertaining now that they allow inverted aerial manouvers.

I turned off the womens hockey after Canada scored their 5th goal on the Italians and it was only half way through the first period.

Yay 1st of many golds to come. They should have mercy rule in womens hockey.

No I haven't but apparently if I do I'll bring along my fishing rod and do some ice fishing. :bustingup

Oh yeah. I love watching the Olympics. The live broadcasts from overseas really screw up my sleep habits, though, because I tend to stay up really late watching practically everything.

One thing I really enjoy since moving up to Canada is that the Olympic coverage here is 100X better than back home in the U.S. where you can only find short highlight broadcasts with way too much filler, and commentary from lame broadcasters. In Canada, the coverage is almost around the clock, the focus is primarily on the events rather than useless background stories, and the quality of commentary is much better. Kudos to the CBC.

You can do a lot when you're funded wiith tax payer's money and don't have to worry so much about ratings.

I agree. Unfortunately total goals count towards tie breakers in the standings so they don't have a mercy rule.

The CBC broadcast in HD is fantastic, anyone agree?

motordavid 02-11-2006 09:21 PM

The NBC feed via ComCrap in HD, here in SW FLA, ain't bad either on the 60" Sony,NoBaloney.

Thunder22 02-11-2006 09:26 PM

when hockey starts, i'll watch. caught some of the luge today...

I've seen better HD broadcasts. I think someone else brought up that it didn't look as clear as I expect. Too far away maybe?

they're bouncing it off a sat and back to their master control in NY, i don't think they're experiencing any quality issues.

X5Flyboy 02-12-2006 12:17 AM

yes,the olympics look great in HD, but I'm getting alot of picture dropouts  and the sound is out of sync. Of course, the commercials come in fine.

commercials are coming in fine because they're generated right at master control. do you have sat or cable?

X5Flyboy 02-12-2006 12:18 AM

cable

Thunder22 02-12-2006 12:22 AM

That's strange. I've been watching on and off (rangers game) and didn't have any dropouts... maybe i just missed it.

X5Flyboy 02-12-2006 12:35 AM

cutout just as the US pairs threw that triple axel (for one), finally saw it on replay - can't understand it as my cable company has been excellent - no problems on other channels - it's really irritating having the sound so out of sync - well, I guess I'll go up and try to sit thru some more (finally setup a wireless system for the house and updated my laptop)

Same deal here in SW FLA via ComCrap: we get dropouts, black screen, "pops and snaps" when it lurches back on, sometimes, etc. The only issue we seldom have is lip sync.

This drop out crap is only on the HD digital feed stations; the non-HD stations never exhibit this, nor does my 2nd TV which is non-digi and just the basic pkg.

I've talked to ComCrap a few times and they have been out a couple times to fix my phone deal with them. The "techs" just sorta shrug on the HD dropout deal and tell me it's normal.

I think it might be "hard" on the set too, with the continual "off and on" effect.

It's 2006 and the CableCo produces signals like it's 1992.

Thanks for letting me rant, :)

B&DCalgary 02-12-2006 02:13 PM

Wow... I just watched the Canadian women's hockey team dissect the Russians 12-0 :yikes: . Nice follow-up to yesterday's 16-0 victory over Italy. Outstanding.

The Canadian women's hockey team is definately looking sharp. But their toughest games are still in front of them.

It's so nice to be here in the Detroit area where we can pick up the CBC broadcasts. NBC isn't showing diddly for much of the day. :tsk:

US-Canada for gold and silver and everybody else is playing for 3rd.

E61Silver 02-12-2006 04:09 PM

I find watching figure skating is boring.

My wife likes it but it puts me to sleep.

The media thinks that’s what people want; to bad they can’t provide a broader range of coverage.

You're one of the lucky ones. I just watched Apollo Anton Ohno blow out of the short track semi-final, so he won't be defending his Gold from Salt Lake. NBC won't get around to showing it until tonight probably as part of the day's highlights. It's sure nice to have live coverage up here.

E61Silver 02-12-2006 04:25 PM

Nbc

They provide delayed coverage and then intstead of showing the event all togther they still break it up over two or three days.

NBC just can't do anything right.

They also moved shows like West Wing to Sunday and therefore kill them; now they are moving Vegas. It like they want to kill shows and drop viewers?

Thunder22 02-12-2006 04:29 PM

Don't forget that MSNBC and Universal HD are both showing the olympics, so if there's nothing on NBC, check out those 2 stations for additional coverage. I just watched the US - Germany women's hockey game on Universal HD, great stuff....

JV 02-12-2006 04:31 PM

Guys- NBC coverage is also on USA & CNBC & MSNBC. They are showing some live events on the other networks such as the women's hockey game- Canada vs. Russia this morning.

JV

Thunder22 02-12-2006 07:30 PM

I was just coming back to add the USA network to the list, good job JV.

Don't forget INHD and Universal HD.

B&DCalgary 02-13-2006 10:49 AM

Ouch.... the women downhillers are dropping like flies in training. Three serious knee injuries, including the defending gold medallist from France as well as contenders from Canada and the U.S.A. Top American Lindsey Kildow looks like she had a devastating injury.

Update: The latest live update is that Kildow's injury is not as bad as feared. Fortunate for her. She might even be able to compete, but it's 50/50.

jaaX3 02-13-2006 11:25 AM

Shawn White = half pipe gold! :)
Bode Miller = not a downhill winner :(
