You really have several options...depending on how much $$$ you want to spend. Since you are looking at earings I would focus mainly on color!! I would aim for "D" color which is the best and not go any lower than E-F. This will ensure a white and very bright stone. There is a huge difference in my opinion when you go down to the G H and beyond which is primarily the stuff you find at retail Jewelers...Tiffany and such.
Having said that I think you could get away with an SI1 to SI2 in clarity. These terms refer to small inclususions in the diamonds...Usually only visible under a loop. For Studs I dont think you'll need to go for a VVS1 or VVS2 or even a VS1 or VS2...you will save your money here.
As far as price goes...for a 1 carat D color stone SI1 clarity you should be a looking at price around 5300-6500 depending on the symmetry of the cut...good, very good, excellent etc.
As you move up in size...1.5 carat same color and clarity $12,000 to $14,000
2 carat...24ish to around 28K each
I have bought several stones from Diamond brokers in the past, so if you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask.
