Stock Market Pickings and Investment Ideas
I don't think anyone's posted investment related topics so I thought it might be worth a thread to discuss what you all think are good investment ideas these days.
I'll start. I began with XX of my savings (money set aside for my own use, wife takes everything else :( ) back in September of last year. Took a lot of risks and made a lot of mistakes along the way, but at the end of the day my portfolio is up 900% after 6 months of trading. Sold everything yesterday on a high. Not too bad for a novice trader. Right now i'm eyeing a few penny stocks and looking for a good entry point. OCGN, OZSC, NIO, and TLSS are a few that i've been studying up. Made my money on FCEL, had it while it was around 2 bucks. Sold and got back in a few times prematurely, but finally held til $28. If I decided these companies aren't worth investing after my due diligence study, I'll probably wait til AT&T drops to 25 or 26 then get it and watch it grow. It's a pretty safe high dividend stock, around 7% annual yield. Any good tips and investments you guys wish to share? p.s. edited to remove actual figures. The amount doesn't seem relevant to the discussion. |
First, super novice here. What platform are you using? We recently paid off almost all of our credit cards and have been saving so have been thinking of starting to "dabble" with disposable income. We'll see.
Nothing invested at current (beside managed 401k and rIRA). I don't really like the market much as I view it as legalized gambling. Which is fine, I have no problem with legalized gambling. You can do due diligence but at the end of the day the market is at the whim of public (and private) sentiment. I find it regularly moves on sentiment rather than results. Which can make you a lot of money if you move in and out. But in general, long term investment will always net you 10-20% over just about any reasonable time period depending on how aggressive you have it managed. That said, I made money with AMD. My Dad would have really made a killing (he has a lot more working capital) if he hadn't gotten cold feet @ $19. Got him in at ~$12 (I don't ever pick individual stocks so it took awhile to convince him, I tried to get him in at $6/share), went up to $40 and back down to $19. He sold the position. Told him it was a mistake and he bought back in at double the shares when it got up to $30. I sold at $80. He's still in with a sell @ $100. FWIW I also tried to get him to buy Tesla near the bottom (~April 2020 I guess) when they hit $300. THAT would have made him a ton. But he didn't want to buy 100 shares of it at that price. He likes to invest in 100 share increments. Also tried to get him into Apple at the bottom, but got the same result. He's doing well anyway. He's beating returns in his managed portfolio by multiples with his "play" portion. |

I actually started my entry with amd as well. Bought and sold numerous times and made enough to buy my 128i M Sport. Love this new to me daily driver. My recent entry last year with fcel is more risky. Watched it on the sidelines for over 6 months before I got in. Still I got in relatively cheap around 2.85. It's certainly legalized gambling and it has it windfall and downside. But like anything worth having in life, you gotta take that leap of faith. |
Yes, I'll start messing around with it after finishing paying off our credit cards. We hit them hard last year and knocked out 80% of that debt. Should finish it this year and that will free up quite a lot of duckets every month.
