Lap Top Mount

I was thinking about getting a rack or mount system for my PC since I use it for Navigation.

Any suggestions?

Wagner 04-05-2006 01:54 PM

:slap: Why would you need a whole PC for navigation?? All you need is a Nav unit and ONE, yes 1, DVD/CD.

There are multiple aftermarket Nav units...which are proven and wouldn't require you to start wiring/mounting a laptop into the car.

E61Silver 04-05-2006 02:03 PM

Why PC Nav

I have a great Laptop PC with 15 inch screen.

Using N Route on it and works well.

I was just looking for nice way to mount my PC.

Wagner 04-05-2006 02:06 PM

Then you would be looking for a mounting location in the front of the car, near the driver. Not sure that would be possible, or street legal.

Thats what I call a USELESS MOD!
I have the oem Sat-Nav system which is more practical than my great 17" laptop.

Because maybe he doesn't wanna waste on $2000 on BMW's nav. It's dismal compared to Japanese automakers' systems.

Considering he has already invested in a laptop beforehand, it would be cheaper that way. Plus he would be able to connect to the internet at times (scout for open LANs under an apartment building).

Laptop vs OEM Nav is a no-brainer!

Wagner 04-05-2006 02:09 PM

Didn't say he needed BMW's Nav system......

Yes I want to mount near the driver, like a cop car. I would think that its legal, no different than looking at a Nav unit.

SuaveX5 04-05-2006 02:29 PM

if your laptop has video out you can install a very small lcd monitor like 7 inch and put your laptop under the seat, and if you want to take it further you can buy a touch screen monitor, that way you can keep the big laptop hiden.

motordavid 04-05-2006 02:33 PM

Is that a worthless mod or a "worth mod"?
Jes'wondering...

Pc Mount for Road Trips

I don't need Nav around town the plan would be to use it for road trips.

Therefore theift would be less of a issue.

Just reading through the posts on this thread......WTF???.....

Was going to mention the security issue, but thats been covered already. So, you want to put your laptop in the car for navigation???? Just go buy a Tom Tom or something similar. Are you telling me that you will get into your car with the laptop, then plug it into a docking station, boot it up (win XP?), login (locally, of course), run your nav application, wait for the gps usb device to kick in etc etc etc etc etc

This is not a bloody fighter jet, it's a car. Horses for courses !! That is the English saying, get the right tool for the job!

:tsk:

actually i've often wondered about doing the same thing ... just like the cop cars have :D i think it'd be cool if there were a way to mount it! (not for nav purposes, just to have a computer there with possibiliy of going online now and then :)

I sound like a Luddite, but I can hardly
wait for my next trip to the wine store,
and see the genius/highly skilled drivers
we have here in SW FL, typing/mousing their
laptops as they drive with their knees
at 80+ mph on I-75. :wtf:

laptop mounts are pretty common in vettes that are tracked. Not during the race/event of course, but for tuning/testing.

I have been considering installing a laptop mount for a long time. During storm season here in Oklahoma I chase every chance I get. That means having a laptop in the truck to view the realtime doppler radar feeds from the NWS & NSSL. So far my "laptop mount" has been the passanger seat and 2 bungie cords. I already have mounts for my 2-way radio, scanner and video recorder. Why not for the laptop too? I think its a great idea.Mark

Roc3b 04-06-2006 02:54 PM

I used to wholesale mutual funds...this would be practical in that sense...email and the voice typing program, when you sometimes have 100 miles between appointments it would make sense...to figure out where ELM st is in town seems like overkill, but hey...who am I? Knock youself out and post pics. I just spent $3k changin the way my Harley looks. I have no room to talk.

rayxi 04-08-2006 04:06 PM

I've been thinking about mounting my old desktop and CRT monitor in my E46. Way more computing power than any laptop. How many watts do I need for an inverter to run a 19" CRT?

E61Silver 04-09-2006 08:00 AM

I think you should mount a satellite dish as well.
