Z4M Sticker Shock

I stopped by to visit some buddies who work at the local BMW dealer. They had 2 Z4M's on display - one very beautiful Interlagos Blue model, the other an Imola Red.

The Imola Red vehicle was fully optioned including NAV - MSRP was $62K+ MSRP. Parked next to it was an '06 M3 Coupe, Competition Package, Premium, Nav, 6-speed for $59K MSRP. Comparing the two side by side, I'm not seeing why the Z4M is priced higher than the M3.

I haven't driven the Z4M yet, but I'm beginning to think it's overpriced. Has anyone else looked at the Z4M's yet and come up with the same notion?

Few things...

- Full leather interior over the M3.
- Faster then the M3.
- Newer than the M3.
- Its a convertible (always priced higher then hard tops)

I'd retry this comparison between a Z4 Coupe and an M3 Coupe. The prices should be a lot closer. Or look at the price of an M3 Convertible...

Apparently a Z4 M roadster is still a bargain compared to a Boxster S (perhaps not when fully loaded...)...

According to BMW it isn't faster then the M3. The M3 runs 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and the 'advertised' speed of the ZM is 5.0 seconds (which I believe is false) but if you go strictly by what BMW says, the M3 would be quicker.

But yah, the ZM will be more expensive because it is brand spanking new and it is a convertible. Compare a fully loaded M3 cabrio to the ZM and you'll notice the prices are the same if not higher on the M3 side.

is the 06 m3 coupe the old body style?

just wait till the sticker on the new m3 coupe comes out..

A fully loaded Boxster S with a hard top is ~ $64k.

Throw out the comparisons to the future E90 M3 - it will be a completely different animal.

After looking at the BMWUSA.COM website, I know understanding BMW's pricing strategy a little better. They are simply pushing the Z4 into a different price category. There is a $6500 difference from the '06 Z4 3.0i ($35,600) to the new mid-year model Z4 3.0si ($42,100). The only differences between the 2 cars - the new 255 HP engine, aluminum trim std., DSP, leather, and a trip computer.

Oh well - I'm waiting for the M Coupe ($49,100) before I do any serious shopping. But in this price range, I have to start thinking Z06.

Ive thought about the Z06 too but dont think i could do it.

ik think i may sell both of my M3s and go for the E90 M3 which will be my street car. and then get a Z4M Coupe strictly for the Track. So i have the best of both worlds. Now i just have to figure out what to replace my 02 M5 with.

I drove it and it's not as fun as my '02 M Roadster. It's seems a little heavier and did not sound as good at all. I still don't like the styling, but I really am not that biased. I was hoping for something better than what I have (IMO), but was a little disappointed.

Dealer said the two that I looked at have been sitting for 2 weeks. No stampede of customers coming in to snatch up these new models. I read some descriptions about the exhaust note issue (or lack of) in Z4um.com. Some folks are saying the older 3.0i models have a much throatier sound than the new Z4M.
