Speeding ticket in the X on Sat...
 

I got pulled over on Saturday on Rt. 611 while passing through the little town of Portland, PA... apparently I was going 46 in a 30 zone. Two things annoy me about this charge:
1. The prevailing speed limit on the road was 45, but apparently there was a brief 30mph zone that escaped my notice.
2. My V1 was active, but I have my Stealth One set to mute warnings below 44mph... which makes me wonder if the alleged "46mph" reading is even accurate.

His radar reading was taken while he was heading toward me from the opposite direction, and there was a car in front of me that was traveling at about the same speed, but he did a U-turn and went for me!
Fortunately the cop was reasonable enough to give me a "Failure to Obey Posted Speed Limit Sign" ticket instead of a "Speeding Ticket", so the cost is less, and no points.

Even though your V1 was active ya gotta keep those eyeballs active also. By your own admission there was a brief 30mph zone that escaped your notice. That being the case take responsibility, smile and chalk it up to bad judgement on your part. As you say the cop was reasonable enough to give you a "Failure to Obey Posted Speed Limit Sign" ticket instead of a "Speeding Ticket", so the cost is less, and no points. I guess the lesson here is "slow down" and there will be no need to get pissed off.

Be glad the cop gave you the lesser charge, either way you were speeding :)

You try driving in England!! The Police are the least of our worries - we have about 6000 speed camera's to worry about :tsk:

Ah but you are aware that there are 6000 of them so your on guard. Over here? Not so consistant. So you gotta keep your wits about cha. Otherwise BAM " we got cha". Even with the cameras some time programming errors cancel the tickets. In a city nearby they were set to shoot the second the yellow went to red. Problem is yellow last 3 seconds the cameras went off at 1.5 seconds. They were challenged the city lost. Why? Human programming error.

I wasn't counting red light camera's - we've got loads of those too. Our ones flash twice - showing you crossing the line and then continuing on. But, they are only active when the light is displaying red!!

Ha! That's nothing - I was doing 83 in a 55 on Friday, and walked away with a written warning!:thumbup:

i was doing 110 in a 55 and i got pulled over from a cop friend....refinanced his house for him and saved him tons of money...

The reason I'm PO'ed is because I'm typically very attentive to such things (which is why I've only had 2 speeding tickets in 16 years of driving)

Look at it this way, the guy in front of you most likely had PA plates and it was the end of the month so the NJ boy got to be the lucky one. It happens. Could have been worse. Feel better now? :) I doubt it, but I tried.

Thank you - that would make me feel better... if it were true! (My X is registered in PA, so I can't chalk it up to that.) Maybe he just targeted the BMW... or maybe I was closing in on the guy in front of me a bit, and my speed registered a MPH or 2 faster than his... who knows.
Anyway, I'm actually very relieved that it's not a "points" offense. That would've added injury to insult!

well i understand why you are pissed, but its good that no pts. are being taken off, just look at it that way i guess.

That sucks.. Being only 17, when I speed I do so in a very careful manner for two reasons.. One, my parents won't let me get a radar detector which I don't have a huge problem with. This means I have to be very good at spotting cops. Also, in New Hampshire you lose your license for 20 days if you get a speeding ticket when you're under 18. I've learned to moderate myself. Off the highway I try to keep it around 5-7mph over, unless I'm on, say, a deserted back road that I know well. On the highway my upper limit is about 85, and that's only if it's a wide open highway with little traffic and it's during the day, ideal weather conditions, etc.. Otherwise I go about 75. So far I've been lucky.. A year and a half with a license, and no tickets yet.

Hey my friend. Sorry you took it that way. But if were me i would have been angry to. But angry at myself for putting myself in that situation. If i then decided to tell others about my experience i would expect to get some heat for for my bad judgement. In fact my friends would have laughed at me getting caught and i would have had to laugh right along with them. Bottom line for me is that stating the obvious is an echo of the truth i may not like to hear but if it rings loud enough perhaps i'll hear the sound in my head and not do the same thing again. You said you had the "auto mute" of the S1 set. You must have the muted volume turned way down, so as not to notice it at all. I just installed my V1/S1 last week, and chose to put the muted volume at "just below annoying", but still easily audible. I also put the speed for the auto mute at 36 mph.

Just some thoughts. If you don't review bad experiences critically, you are condemned to repeat them, right?

Yeah, I keep my auto-mute volume all the way down b/c driving around in the city, the V1 goes crazy all the time... it's for this reason that I'm so thrilled with the way the Stealth One works. But I will definitely back down the auto-mute from 44 to 38... that would've saved me a ticket!

Yes, you're both absolutely correct. (Sorry to pick on your post, Quicksilver! No hard feelings... :)) As far as critically reviewing the situation, there's really not much to learn that I didn't already know full well! Again, my frustration was that I let my guard down (my wife and I were arguing!), and it cost me.
As CJ described above, I have long since gotten into the habit of being on constant "cop-watch", as I have never owned a radar detector prior to last October... and I have done my fair share of speeding. :whistle: Hopefully the V1/S1 isn't resulting in an atrophy of my keep eye for speed traps...

Its the end of the month the cops have to meet their ticket quota, good thing he let you slide with paying the fine and no points. The same thing happened to me in the late '90's when I had my E30 M3 on the PA Turnpike between Rt. 611 and Rt. 309, cop said "I was off his gun" which he said was set at 99 mph. I was rushing home to catch a Flyers game (they ended up losing the series to no ones surprise) the police officer told me to tune the game on the radio 610 am WIP and SLOW down. Gave me a ticket for disregarding signs with no points, he advised me to pay the ticket in no uncertain terms. Unfortunately I was running naked my V1 was in the glove box. The worst part of it all was that my wife who was sitting in the front passenger seat was upset because she thought I was going to be arrested and she didn't know how to drive a stick shift. I learned my lesson and now the V1 is active at all times on the highway.

i got pulled over saturday on my way to a friends graduation party, i was going 95 and the limit was 65.. the cop wasn't a real asshole but yet still didn't give me any slack off my speed.. but what was kind of weird was that he was giving my cousin-in-law shit.. he asked him if he had anything to drink and questioning him, but yet i was the driver.. i just did my 60K service and it ran smoothly that's prolly why i was so excited to speed and see how it would run..

If it were me I would write a letter to the Mayor and the police chief explaining what happend. San Francisco police officers are on the hot seat right now for some bad decisions in the past and bad behaviour brought up by a citizen won't go un-noticed. Be very nice in that letter.
