Da Vinci Code wars: What's next, a papal fatwah?

The Vatican is really getting its knickers in a knot over this silly ass book. I wonder if Salmon Rushdie has an extra cot?

Disclosure- I myself am a lapsed Catholic.

To me, this is similar to when many Jewish groups complained about "The Passion of the Christ", thereby black-balling Mel Gibson to studios and distributors of films.

If something aims to drive home a message you think is detrimental to your group- you're gonna try to make damn sure the public knows what your position is. No one is gonna tithe an organization that doesn't seem to be interested in standing up for itself. After all, Catholics don't have an ADL, we're stuck with the Vatican as our muscle.

In the case of the "Passion" it's a matter of historical interpretation in the absence of fact and an offended group could make a case there. However, Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction plain and simple. It seems that people are losing sight of that little detail.

And that sure did wonders for surpressing its popularity.

If anything, it made Jews like myself want to go see it just to see what all the fuss was about.

When it comes to promoting films, any press is good press. The more of a controversy there is over this film, the more people will go see it.

And we may never know if the scrolls and stone carvings and papyrus etc. we're basing that so-called history on were fiction or not.

"Passion" was dumb IMO. If I want to watch portrayals of people getting their ass beat then Elizabeth I on HBO was far better (oh and real facts not interpretation of something someone wrote about).

I find it ironic that a 'FAITH' based notion takes such offense to another piece of fiction (without the faith). Simply state you disagree and walk away, that was all that was needed. I think the Vatican could spend its time on more important issues like excommunicating Chinese bishops and making sure others aren't feeling up alter boys.

Yes. You would think they are busy enough sheltering illegal immigrants.

Very true on getting the attention of the public just before the movie is released.
