I'm getting a dog...
 

I'm going to be getting a black lab soon and here's the problem. I just have trouble with the idea of the dog trashing the X5. Can anyone share how they transport their dog with relative ease without getting the interior totally messed up? crate in back or nylon divider. Any help would be appreciated. I've had a chocolate lab in the past and know that there is quite a toll on the interior....

I have a 55lb Pit Bull (which is much smaller size wise then a full grown lab) but I have taken her on trips from Maryland to Vermont with me. She simply lays on the back seat. However, while a pup, best bet is to put the dog in the far back area. Make sure you keep the rules clear that the dog is not allowed to jump all over the leather (as the claws can make nice rips).

As with most things, 'parental' direction is key.

I have a chocolate lab and take her with us snowboaring 10X a year. I just fold the read seats down (hiding the leather) and let her roam. She mostly sleeps or looks out the window. I have a "pop-up" dog tent that I keep in in if I leave the vehicle.

Our dogs go in the back and we have a dog guard.

I carted both of my Boxers around in the back of the X a couple times. Worst toll on the interior was the drool I had to wipe off;)

Take your dog for a loooooong walk just before you load up- it helps if they're a little tired:thumbup:

Anyway, when I had the X, we would put all 3 in the back with no divider, 1 english bulldog (60lbs) and 2 mini schnauzers. Sometimes the schnauzers would try and jump over, but they got down when told. Often, if we were just driving with the bullie, we'd put blankets down and seatbelt him in the back seat.

With a lab, hair and drool will be your problems. I know the bullie hair was a pain to clean out.

My Chihuahuwa always rides around in the back seat, When I got him I was most worried about his claws puncturing the leather but seems fine, I think the interior is durable enough to handle a dog

There is a big fabric cover that covers the entire cargo area, including the sides of the seatbacks. That would be best. I've seen pictures but it has been quite some time since I saw that post. That would work well because even if you get a Weathertech rubber cargo mat, which I would suggest, the sides and seatbacks are like Velcro with lab hair. I know this because I had SANguru's yellow lab in the back of my X5 and there was dog hair all over the the carpet. It's a son-of-a-beesting to clean up. :mad:

Try a combination of the cargo tray liner and luggage compartment grill. It will protect the cargo area carpet and prevent your dog from jumping over into the rear seat (you're on your own as far as the window drool and nose marks go, though) ;) Both accessories are available from the dealer, part numbers 51470002726 and 51470004087 respectively.

Our two criminals suggest a good brushing prior to transport. But no bath, please.

Well, my German Shepherds ride in the back as this is the safest spot for them in the truck. I have a the all weather rubber cargo liner on the floor of the trunk, then the full trunk liner that hooks up around the rear headrests, this anchors it very well (also it has suction cups for the side windows in the trunk area), and then a thick comforter.

Just remember, if your dogs are unrestrained on the back seat, this is very dangerous for them and you if they are flung forward........ you will be visiting your friendly neighbourhood veterinarian and local ICU.
