You need to decide if you are more likely to be a serious student of the game, or a golf marketers dream.

If you are a serious student of the game, get fitted with quality clubs and take lessons. Spend more money on lessons than equipment. And practice.

If you are a golf marketers dream, buy the set of clubs that is getting the most current media attention. When you start missing putts, go out a buy a new putter - or two. You can never have enough putters. When you hook or slice your drive, run out and buy the latest giant oversized graphite driver. Make sure to always get the latest and greatest - and keep your gold card handy. Lean about COR, MOI, CG, UTW, ICT, RE*AX and other "important' terms.

My suggestion is to look for a reputable PGA pro for some lessons before you buy any gear. Take the first set of lessons with rental gear. Only after you know how to swing the sticks properly, and make good contact with the ball, can you appreciate one set of clubs over another. Ask the pro you take lessons with to hook you up with a high quality used set at his club pro shop.

If you don't take the lessons, chances are you won't enjoy the game and whatever clubs you buy will end up in the lake anyway.;) This advice is not from an expert. Just someone who regularly wants to throw his gear in the lake.

being a fairly avid golfer, I suggest going out the shops such golf and tennis world and just hit them in the cage. Most driving ranges also will let you rent and try out clubs. for ~500, look for set of used Ping G3, old Callaway X14's or Taylor made 300's or Firesoles. Good irons cavity backs that are very easy to hit and will not frustrate you to no end like a set of blades. I say just use your irons, perfect your swing and then start looking into woods and drivers. a bad swing will be magnified by longer clubs.
