Recommendations for a AWD under $25k?

I want something small like a Matrix but more powerful... I was looking at the Subaru line and found good stuff but was wondering what else that I've missed? Not really into a wagon type car but not a SUV either... I was thinking about the Subaru Outback Impreza a la Saab 9-2x...

Just in case you change your mind re: getting another SUV...
I know you already have the X5, but the new generation Nissan Xterra has gotten really great reviews in both Motor Trend and Car & Driver. You can get a base model Xterra (but still has the 4.0L 6-cylinder 270HP engine) for less than $25K.

Get a used 3-series xi. Will fit that budget.

If you're not getting a Suby, check out the Chevy AWD Equinox

4wd = low range and locking diffs. That's the difference. so to answer the other question above, the the Evo is not 4wd.
