Cable or DSL ?
 

I want to use one lifeline, so i want to take a poll from the board...
How are you connected : cable or a DSL ?

I have a great cable co here in town - a bit pricy, but great service and phone help (what few times I've needed them, very quick response and actual repair times) - I have heard some horror stories elsewhere (SC,CT)

I had SBC DSL but it required rebooting the router every 2-3 days. Became a pain. Moved to cable and happy since.

No other way but cable.......DSL is too finicky.

What is nice, too, is the competition from DSL in my area keeps the cable company on their toes. I went outside one day, and found the cable guy messing with some wiring in their box at the roadside. I jokingly said, "You increasing the speed of my cable?" He said, "Yes, I am." He then told me all about it. No increase in cost, either. It was all being done to counter the phone company's latest DSL push.

Got to love competition!

iop, I have Comcast cable and just downloaded a 21MB file at 1.51MB/sec. It is a bit pricey, $43/month for cable TV customers and I think $53 or something like that for non-customers. I have not had any problems with either the TV or internet service. It's been down maybe twice for about 2 hours each in the 3 or 4 years that I've had it.

I have had SBC DSL for about 4 years and they only charge me 21.99/month to keep me from going to cable. Never had a problem with it :thumbup:

Had DSL for years, had to switch to cable when the DSL reliability turned to sh*t.

ditto what all the other folks said. Cable is much faster and much more reliable especially in northern ca

I have Optimum Online, awarded the best and fastest cable in the country, 4.5mb/sec but Verizon is running fiber starting one town at a time will be interesting soon. Fiber is in the Gigga bytes for speed.

I'm using cable, but not by choice. I am 644 feet beyond the DSL distance limit despite living in highly urban area which is proof that the DSL limitations suck. I have been using Charter cable for 5 years - no major issues and the speed is typically very fast.

BTW - there is a 3rd alternative. A PCMCIA wireless card on one of the new high speed networks. The monthly subscription rates are now down low enough to be competitive with DSL and cable. The speed sacrifice is a lot less than what it was, coverage is improving daily as these networks mature, and the benefit is portability - your hotspot is now the free world.

cable internet access throughput is affected by what your neighbors do because you share the wire with them. that's one benefit of DSL, you're on your own connection until you hit the switch.

G, Yeah I was aware of that...in our lil'developement in FL, there is not a plethora of kids downloading MySpace or skin flicks and there is really no rhyme or reason why it gets so slow at what I would consider "odd times".

I had DSL back in NY and it was very good; I could get DSL in FL, but I presumed the "pkg" of junque from ComCrap, (phone, internet, cable, HD/DVR upgrade), would carry some swag; it does not. They are nearly clueless in SW FL.

No DSL or cable, here on the mtn, in my lifetime; thus decent high speed wireless from out local hillbilly ISP provider.

DSL is dirt cheap compare to cable. Cable is blazing fast! Cable modem has solved security issues long time ago.

I use comcast, they usually run introductory special. Switch everytime DSL or Cable special runs out if you want to save some money.

8 bite = 1 Byte
3 mb/sec(m bps) = 3/8 mB/Sec
Good enough for most of us.

If you download whole lot of multimedia files (aka porn) you are better off with cable! No Money No Honey

8 bitS in 1 Byte, but traditionally Bytes don't figure in connectivity measurements, it's measured in bits.

ethernet is 10/100/1000 MegaBITS/second with 1000=1Gb/s
most DSL is 1.5-3Mb/s
most cable is 4-15Mb/s

capital B is byte
small b is bit

if you want to test your speed, go to http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and use a WIRED connection to get your true speed.

I'm getting ~ 14Mb/s down and 2Mb/s UP on Cablevision here in NJ.

I've been using snappydsl for the last three years - a 3mb line - I have haz zero problems! - service is great - pricing is good ($70.00 per month) I get NO BLOCKED PORTS, I host my own websites on the line etc... No reboots - simply put - really happy! :)

$70 a month for 3Mb?!?!?! wow, that's expensive. Are you getting fixed IP's with that? (i'm assuming you are if you're hosting websites on it)

AT&T High Speed Internet (DSL) all the way!! 6 MB currently, and soon to be 25 to 50 MB once Project Lightspeed is deployed here at the end of the year. Cable can't touch the pricing or service I get!!

You are right. Using bps(bit per sencond, bite was my misspelling) should be a standard. I was trying to clarify misusage of a small b and and a capital B.

Big difference there. However Windows like to use Byte/sec indiciating download speed perhaps since elements of packets are in single byte charcters. Telco companies always use bps since it sounds like it is lot more, eight times to be exact. Users beware.

@gresch Yup - I do get a static IP for that. Yes it is a bit pricey - but what I like about it is that I get NO re-directed ports ALA: SMTP (25) http (80) etc... it is basically a clean line - I run my own mail server / nntp server / web servers / DNS etc - behind it. As it does not suffer from Broadband degradation issues I prefer the DSL route

I run a linux box and a windows advanced server 2000 on the line with great access speeds on both servers.
