Extreme High-Speed Internet
My high-speed internet provider upgraded me for free to "extreme" high-speed internet via cable internet.
Max download is up to 16 mbps & max upload is up to 3 mbps!!:) I just did a speedtest on www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and this is my latest result.... Last Result: Download Speed: 12172 kbps (1521.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 2228 kbps (278.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Not too shabby with just a "firmware" upgrade on my cable modem. |
:wow:who's your isp, and on what basis did they do this?
|
If he's on a local cable ISP they're probably trying to keep up with Verizon's roll out of FIOS. I know that Time Warner cable did bump up speeds soon after FIOS started rolling out near me. TWC sent me a letter to reboot my cable modem to get faster download speeds.
|
Yup! Local cable ISP--Adelphia. Yes, Verizon is rolling out FIOS. My in-laws has FIOS and it is the same speed. I just used a closer server for the Speakeasy speedtest and got slightly better result just now....
Last Result: Download Speed: 13106 kbps (1638.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 2216 kbps (277 KB/sec transfer rate) Also, PNG, off the topic, I can see a huge, frequent, heavy lightning out east....are you guys getting massive lightning storm? Hopefully it won't spark another fire... Quote:

That's awesome. If you have not done so, you should tweak your TCP settings and you will likely get that extra delta of speed you are missing. Use the below link to do a tweak test. It will tell you how to optimize your settings. Then download DrTcp to adjust them. Likely your Receive Window is low. Boosting to a minimum of 75290 will likely get you the extra speed.
Enjoy! http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks Quote:

Results from Charter Low Speed Internet (rated at 3Mbps) - San Gabriel Valley:
Download Speed: 2618 kbps (327.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 234 kbps (29.3 KB/sec transfer rate) |
Quote:
Down: 7774kbps Up: 496kbps Then I ran the tweak test with the following results: Actual data bytes sent: 174281 Actual data packets: 121 Max packet sent (MTU): 1500 Max packet recd (MTU): 1500 Retransmitted data packets: 0 sacks you sent: 0 pushed data pkts: 24 data transmit time: 2.552 secs our max idletime: 943.9 ms transfer rate: 60409 bytes/sec transfer rate: 483 kbits/sec This is not a speed test! transfer efficiency: 100% It appears as though I'm good 2 go  |
Feeling Sick
Just looking at those speeds make me feel nauseous. I went to the link and my results were:
Download - 188kbps (23.5Kb) Upload - 64kbps (8Kb) This is on a supposed 1mb line that costs $150 p/m We are waiting anxiously for real speed in my country. |

I typically get ~ 15kb/s down and 8kb/s up from Cablevision... it all depends upon what time of day you do the test. People who use a cable tv company as as ISP all share the same wire back to the ISP POP, so what your neighbor is downloading can/will affect your speed.
|
Speed tests in general are very inaccurate. The only true measure is to FTP a file from a reliable server and look at the data transfer rate. Having said that, I find www.testmy.net to be the most accurate, followed by Speakeasy.

Did they recommend anything? Raising your RWIN? It does make a difference.

Okay, I used the www.testmy.net website (vs. www.speakeasy.net/speedtest) and here is my download speed:
:::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 19733 Kbps about 19.73 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 2409 kB/s Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (Server 2) Test Time:: 2006/07/17 - 8:07am Bottom Line:: 344X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 0.43 sec Tested from a 12160 kB file and took 5.048 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: Awesome! 20% + : 402.37 % faster than the average for host (adelphia.net) ..... Here is my upload speed: :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Upload Connection is:: 1800 Kbps about 1.8 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Upload Speed is:: 220 kB/s Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/07/17 - 8:10am Bottom Line:: 31X faster than 56K 1MB Upload in 4.65 sec Tested from a 2992 kB file and took 13.6128 seconds to complete Upload Diagnosis:: Awesome! 20% + : 239.62 % faster than the average for host (adelphia.net) .... Hmmm, not sure which one is more realistic, but my internet connection download speed really rocks on the www.mytest.net vs. www.speakeasy.net/speedtest, but the upload speed appears faster on the speakeasy site.... Anyhow, the EXTREME high-speed cable internet appears to be in order for me!! P.S. I have used the speakeasy test before the upgrade and I was only getting about 3 mbps for download and never higher than 768 kbps for upload. Quote:

I don't ever put any creedance in any of the numbers, i just use them as a baseline for comparison testing when I think that my line is congested or having some other issue.
|
nice Doc.. I'm jealous.
|
The funny thing, those idiots at Adelphia told me that it would be an "automatic" upgrade for free. They told me that 3 months ago and I didn't noticed any difference. So, I finally called them on it 2 weeks ago and now I'm flying. What I truly appreciate is the increase on upload speed when I send large files/pics, etc......The faster download speed is a bonus as well.
It's like I have a M5 internet speed connection;) Quote:

download 4805kbps, upload 359kbps using speakeasy. I'm on Time Warner as well, Kevin. You think they'll end up upgrading all around (as in out by me)?:zoom:
|
That is why I called them. They sent me a letter stating that I didn't have to do anything. WRONG! Anyhow, rebooted the modem and they sent a new config file and voila, extreme high-speed internet!!:)

Internet frog says I am getting 7.3 . Any idea who is more correct? |
Speakeasy:
Last Result: Download Speed: 24712 kbps (3089 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 3781 kbps (472.6 KB/sec transfer rate) http://www.speedtest.net/result/402261898.png |

Last Result: Download Speed: 33282 kbps (4160.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 9513 kbps (1189.1 KB/sec transfer rate) |
Speakeasy says:
Download Speed: 6676 kbps (834.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1845 kbps (230.6 KB/sec transfer rate) http://www.speedtest.net/result/402353082.png |
Got this:

Ok, thx to all!

I don't put much trust into the speakeasy site, here are my numbers:
Download Speed: 19810 kbps (2476.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 5632 kbps (704 KB/sec transfer rate) Now using SurfSpeed2, which is WAY more reliable: download speed: 97.83 KB/sec. Wow, that is too much of a difference to really believe. But Speakeasy is using TRUE websites, not a dedicated server like speakeasy. Do a google search for surfspeed2, and run the program. You will get real numbers. |
