Any PC/Console Game Fanatics out there?

Yester day I had an interesting conversation with 44 yrs old Jewish guy at my favorite Sushi bar. He was really into PC Game called WOW(World of Warcraft) it is the most popular MMRPG(Masively Multiplayer Role Playing Game).
He is active in the game, write forum articles, and run the clans. He also claims he met a beatiful 36 year old Spanish Enginner online soon to be united in LA.
I was in Game Developing Business for few years, I know why people are facinated/addicted to this game. Last game I played was Diablo II, it was very addictive even though I don't have any gene that is prone to addiciton. (Yes, I get bored easily.)
Do you have any favorite PC/Console game?

Ishniknork 08-16-2006 11:14 PM

A couple of years ago I was on a Mechwarrior league. Team play. Had voice communication and everything. It was a lot of fun and I played for about 1.5 years. Just got to be too demanding of my time though. We had league battles almost every night that would take 2-3 or more hours to do so I finally gave it up. I mean 5 nights a week is just too much! Biggest problem was getting enough good players on your team so you didn't have to play all the time.

I've always liked First Person Shooters the best. Action stuff like Doom, FarCry, Quake, F.E.A.R., Half Life, Call of Duty, etc. I love killing stuff that isn't real ;) ! Driving games are cool too. That's about all I play now. I only play on the PC, I don't like the game box controls of the Playstation and X-Box. Not enough control. Those "+" directional buttons and cheesy joysticks just don't compare to the fluidity of a mouse, keyboard and full size joystick for accurate control!

X5Jones 08-17-2006 04:10 AM

PC FPS for me too!

Although I have been spending a scary amount of time playing The Elder Scrolls - Oblivion, am I becomeing an RPG addict? ;)

I've never owned a console in my life and only played them about 6 times in my life.

Been playing, Doom (at the age of 7), Doom II Doom III(at the age of 20), all of the Quake trillogy, Half-Life trillogy (my favorite of all time), F.E.A.R , Call Of Duty & COD II, Medal of Honor, GTA III Vice City and San Andreas,Far Cry, Duke Nukem 1 2 3D Manhatten project and Forever, Aliens Versus Predator II, Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2, Deus-Ex, etc, etc, etc....

And in honor of the best game of all time (and its hundreds of modifications)
Forget Doctor Breen, Kneel down before your Ruler!, Gordon Freeman!
http://www.pcw.gr/uploads/MorfeasFX/...0wallpaper.jpg

If you play FPS games and haven't played Half-Life, you aint an FPS gamer at all!.

SuaveX5 08-17-2006 07:35 AM

a few years ago I played Unreal Tournament 2003/04 on a clan, i loved it but i don`t have the time for it anymore.

x5user 08-17-2006 08:32 AM

I play all kind of games. I love tatic games. Now I am playing game call Sega gundam(MS Sage, a new dawn) on PS 2. Graphic looks out dated even though they released this year(what's up? Bandai) Anyway, this game has strong story line and I like it a lot. BTW, it's turn around game. Some people don't like turn around game, I wasn't. I am sure I played every games that you guys can name it(maybe not). :)

pseto 08-17-2006 09:29 AM

Huge Madden fan, can't wait till next Tuesday for the new release. Hmmmm.....maybe I'll take the day off.

acedeucy 08-17-2006 09:31 AM

Dead Rising, PREY, DOOM 3, and NCAA Football for XBOX 360!

Currently in my second day in Dead Rising! And to think XBOX 360 isn't even using 30% of it's capabilites yet.

HALO 3 should be really great!

Driver8 08-17-2006 11:46 AM

I go through phases. I played Project Gotham Racing 1&2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein to the end (Xbox) as well as Gran Turismo 1/2/3 (PS2). On the other hand, I have several Madden games and the GTA series and could never really get into them. I've been playing the original Halo here and there and find it mildly addictive, but it's a good game. Back in the day I played Half-Life, the Doom series, Duke Nukem, the Quake series, etc. (And here's one for the old skool gamers...Wizardry! My first game addiction.) I tend to play more when the weather gets cold since the days are shorter and it's too cold to go out.

ravenheart 08-17-2006 12:05 PM

For me its Strategy games :) The first time I played Civilization 1 on the Amiga 500 it was pure magic.

Now I am waiting for Medieval 2 - Total War. It will be the game to end all games for me. Atleast until they make another one. Also been playing alot of Civilization 4 - though the new expansion was a big let-down. Also played Oblivion - I genuinly think that is a step forward - a true Next Gen game if you will, but that is another discussion for another time.

In the past I played Counter Strike alot - was in a british clan - we managed alright :) But as has been mentioned to play that kind of game seriously takes up alot of time - so as responsebilities grew game-skills faded :)

Now for the real nail in the coffin - proving that I am a gamer - I met my wife through Star Wars Galaxies :) She was a Twi'lek dancer and I was a trandoshian bounty hunter - a match made in heaven :)

You just proved Online Game is not only for pimply teenagers who doesn't shower.
(Assuming you are not the pimply teenager who's F&*%ing with me.:nanana: )

I've been mostly a PC Gamer but I own two PS2s for my family members. Of course Played Half-Life(s). Only PS2 games I liked were Onimusha(1,2,and 3.)
I wasn't crazy about it but I also played StarCraft back in my days. They still have tornaments and broadcast in live TV in Korea.

Lineage I, II are huge for MMRPG, but WOW just took over the market share.
I am thinking about getting back in the game.

rangerfan 08-17-2006 03:09 PM

I was a UT junkie back in 99 thru 02. I've been playing Battlefield 2 for the past year and still play a few night a week for a bit. It is more fun when you have a bunch of people working together on the voice comm.

asawadude 08-17-2006 03:22 PM

My sons were into both Warcraft and Diablo for years, until they discovered girls. As for me, I've been playing Tiger Woods PGA 2003 for several years; I'm still trying to unlock all the courses. It's the perfect game because you can play it for 5 minutes or 5 hours.

Damn! Forgot about the old Duke Nukem series, and the original Wolfenstein too! Those two games and Doom were what got me started on computers. I was scared to death of them then and now I build my own!

Half Life does rock, especially HL2. I think FarCry is my favorite though for it's freedom of movement. You can go just about anywhere in its great, open outdoor maps. There are so many ways you can approach/tackle a situation it never gets boring. I was really mad when FC2 came out and it was only for the consoles!

I rented Grand Theft Auto Series from Blockbuster Video since I was curious about the media hype. The latest one suppose to have some hacks to reveal some X-Rated scenes but I wan't able to find it. Okay that was the real reason I rented them. Perhaps I should wait for XBox 360 or PS3 to hack them, since it has better resolution.
I am not a big fan of shoot'em kill'em all type of game. Yes I am very peaceful and well adjusted individual.;) Some games that will take not more than 8 hours to finish with the help of hacks don't just entice me enough.
Those I rent them.

I also played Final Fantasy XI, WOW totalled ripped off this game and hit it big. With Subsribtions they get (15$/mon) my friends says they should make 1 bil. $/year. Still Blizzard is the King!

PersonaNonGrata 08-18-2006 03:41 AM

I'm a PC gamer almost exclusively playing FPS games. Currently working my way through Godfather which is based on the GTA engine. Very cool game and more fun than GTA. I finished GTA II and started GTA San Andreas but never finished it out of boredom.

I love, love, love Call of Duty and COD II. I play online and at my peak I'll play everynight. (Lame, I know.) I used to play tons of Medal of Honor too and I couldn't count the number of hours I've spent playing COD and MOH.

Yes, I forgot to mention my first ever 3D game- Wolfenstein 3D :D

Cal Of Duty II, Half-Life II and GTA SA are my main games these days, but occasionaly I'l fire up Doom and get all nostalgic.

Ishniknork 08-18-2006 11:17 PM

Did anyone know there's a new addition to Half Life 2? I just picked up HL2 Episode One at Best Buy.

JonK,

I'm not sure what you mean by this: "You mean the Homer Simpson Charcter Hacks or I am getting confused." What I was saying was that I was scared of computers at first but those games got me into them. Now I do 3D solid modeling as part of my job at work!

I've never played GTA but I know about the explicit scenes you can hack into. Can't help you with it but you might search http://www.g4tv.com/ for the hacks. There's a Cheats! show you could try or X-Play. I watch Attack of The Show and X-Play and know I've seen them tell what the hacks were.

...and Olivia Munn on AOTS is HOT! :trustme:

There have been some character swab hacks on P/C games. I remember changing my characters to Homer Simpson instead of some scary looking guy I was playing as.

I'll do some digging up to clarify further.

He-he, just finished playing COD II on "Veteran" (or whatever the hardest setting is) for the second time 2 weeks ago. That game is so awesome! I didn't really realize just how good it was until I started MOH Pacific Assault on "Realistic" again right afterwards. COD II beats it hands down.

Curious, what's your favorite weapon in COD? I like the BAR, then the sniper rifle .

I just might try some online COD. Is it league type play or do you just join a side and play whenever you want?

I prefer the StG44 when its available or the M1921 Browning Automatic Rifle

For sniper rifles you can't beat the old M1903 Springfield scoped rifle although the scoped Gewher 43 is handy for those intense moments where a bolt action isn't fast enough.

I've had HL2 Episode1 for a few weeks and can't stop playing it!

You know you like a game when you play it twice. I did that with COD II and like you, the second time was played at the highest level. I really like using the M1 Garand. It packs a wallop and while you can't reload it, I still like it best. I'm not fan of the "spray and pray".

If you start COD MP (multi-player) it connects you with a ton of online games you can join. You pick a type of game and a map and click to join in. You'll find your favorite servers that have the settings you like and the maps you like. There are even some with custom maps that are really cool. There is one server that has a custom map of Alcatraz. It's a blast.

Cool on the HL2 Episode, I haven't loaded it yet. Probably tomorrow. I didn't even know it was out until today when I stopped at Best Buy to check out some music CDs and browsed the games.

And yes, the STG44 is real nice. Better than the Thompson at long range accuracy but I really like the knock-down power of the BAR! I usually cary both if I can find an STG and collect enough ammo. Wish the BAR could cary more rounds in a clip though. Have to reload more often but that's offset by it's ability to easily drop an opponent in one or two shots.

Exactly my thoughts on the Springfield and Gewher 43 too. ;)

You got that right. I rarely play a game more than once. Most are "Been there, done that". COD II and Far Cry have been the exceptions lately. If you haven't tried Far Cry, you should! It's really amazing. The outdoor maps are so open and give you so many ways to approach/attack your enemies. You're not locked into a corridor as much as most games.

On weapons choice, the M1 is a great one. I use it almost like a sniper rifle sometimes. I like the BAR for similar reasons. Packs an even bigger wallop, but you can reload it anytime. It also gives you the option of automatic fire when needed. Can be used as single-shot weapon too. That's mostly the way I use it. The "Spray and Pray" method is not the best tactic anyway IMO.

Thanks for the info on COD MP. I'm def gonna try it out. If you happen to see a guy named "Ishniknork" in there sometime, DON'T SHOOT ME!

JonK 08-20-2006 03:52 PM

I am gonna grab a copy of COD II this afternoon. As I said I am never good at battle game... It would purely a research purpose. I want to find out how they have mascerated/cheated out lagging and attenuation issues as a former network game developer. ;)

Well, I spent 2.5 hours downloading the darn thing late last night and haven't played it yet. I forgot about the STEAM thing, that's really a bummer with Valve. Spent today over in Dallas at the Hard Rock Cafe listening to my nephews' cover band "Hard Night's Day" http://hardnightsday.com/ and just got back. I'll try to let you know tomorrow (Monday).

Oops, I just noticed, it's already tomorrow...

I've got a 3 year old Athalon 2200 with a 256Mb RADEON 9550 and 1Gb RAM it runs reasonably well, but the frame rate as usually about 30FPS unless I am looking at a wall or somthing, and it drops much lower during scenes of intense combat in large enviroments.

It told me to update my graphics drivers too, but the latest version of ATI Catalyst fixed mine up perfectly, and made the game run better.

The new HDR dynamic lighting takes a bit of effort and slows my computer down quite a bit, but with all the graphics settings on maximum except for anti-aliasing and HDR it runs fine.

And don't froget to check out the trailer for EP2 on Steam.

OK, I've played quite a bit of it now. Seems to run fine on my P4 3.2 OC'd to 3.5 w/1 Gig. RAM, Asus P4C800E Deluxe Motherboard and BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC 256mb 8X AGP. Automatic game settings are all on HIGH including 4X antialaising at 1024x768 resolution. Every now and then when I enter a new area with lots of lighting it might hesitate for 1/100th of a second, but mostly it's smooth as silk. Turning off the antialaising would probably get rid of that hesitation, but its not bad enough to worry about.

The program did tell me I don't have the latest video driver installed but I haven't updated it yet. (If it works, don't fix it!) At times I've found that an older driver (but not too old) works better on a particular system for some things.

Haven't had any sound issues either. I'm running a Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Gamer sound card in 5.1 Surround.

HL2 is very demanding on your system as are most newer games (:captainob ). All I could suggest without knowing more about your system is to lower the video settings. Turn off AA, HDR, lower Anistropic filtering and try playing on 800x600 or 640x480 resolution. You might try setting the sound quality to low also. It could be that some of the sound issues you're having are due to the graphics problems.

Give us some info on you system... it might help diagnose you probs ;)

I've actually finished the game. ( )
I ended up doing as you said, lowering the settings. It didn't solve the problem, but made it playable. I could have (I think) solved the problem by using one of my other computers to play it, but I didn't want to...

Thanks for the advice! I'm looking forward to #2...

good to know there's other Madden fans on this board. the game ain't too much different than last year for PS2 except controlling the blocking which works pretty well. i still may get an xbox360 to play in HD until PS3 comes out

I play both the Xbox 360 and on the PC....right now I am totally hooked on Dawn of War, what a game the best of everything rolled in one...as turned based games go this was the RTS game of the year...online against peps from all over the world there is some intense action.

Update!, I just forked out $350 on a Geforce 6600 GT 256MB DDR3 AGP card and even Oblivion runs smoothly on my 3 year old system!

So before you get talked into thinking AGP is useless now that PCI-Express is here, and you need to rebulid your system to run the latest games, think again! A high end AGP card with the latest drivers will revitalize even the oldest of 1.5 - 2 Ghz systems

I'm running HL2 in 1280X1024 with everything on maximum and its silky smooth.

Excellent X5Jones! Nice, isn't it? ;)

I've always prefered the NVidia cards myself. Much better driver support. That GeForce 7800 I got really made a difference for me too. I'll probably be able to go at least another year on my 1.5 year old 8x AGP box.

You can get 6600GT with 256MB and the AGP interface for under $150. Where did you even "find" one for $350?!

I agree that AGP is far from outdated. Of course unless you go into cards like the X1900XTX, X1950XTX, 7800GTX, 7900GTX or 7950GTX, then the AGP will have sufficient bandwidth.

I'm using a Sapphire Radeon X850XT PE PCI-E with a Zalman VF700-Cu all-copper heatsink/fan to run in near silence. The stock Arctic Cooling-based reference cooler made noise like a prop engine.

I run HL2 at 1280x1024 AA4X AF8X Texture Max at an average of 75FPS. I do an average of 60FPS in BF2 under the same conditions.

It will be soon time for a new system I guess. But I want to sit out Intel's Conroe (Core 2 Duo).

Instead I'm waiting for their quad-core Kentsfield and Clovertown pieces with the 1333FSB!

Sorry, I forgot to add that it is in Australian Dollars, but I'm not sure of the conversion rate these days so I can't give you a US/CAD price.

My long answer...

I used to be a huge PC game freak. Unfortunately because of constant computer problems, I had to move to a MAC and abandoned all CPU gaming. I still do some console gaming but it's just not the same..

The best game I ever played and was totally addicted too, was actually a game that was hosted on AOL. It's downfall was when AOL went unlimited for $20/month back in 1996 or so. The massive usage crashed the game and it was never the same again.

The game was called AIR WARRIOR by Konami I think. It was a WWII (mostly fight simulator) where you had to take off, land, dog-fight, bomb, and take over enemy bases. As it was an online game, it was like being in the middle of a constant war. Dog fighting skills were a must and there were some really good pilots out there. It was a game totally ahead of it's time and I miss it. I often find myself buying flight games in the hopes of getting some glimpse of the game of old but am always let down.
There were three teams (countries) A, B and C. and country A would fight B and C. Country C would fight A and B, etc. for bases.
It was the closest thing to a simulator that I have ever played. Graphics were a bit dated by today's standard but no one cared.

It is unfortunate that games have not gotten better. I think they have gotten much worse. Remember: Police Quest or Full Throttle or the early Lucas Arts games like TIE FIGHTER. Even the first MECH WARRIORS were cool. And the old tank simulators and APACHE helicopter games.

The late 90's was the pinnacle for PC gaming. It was before online play was prevelant but the stand alone games were insane. Like when Rainbow 6 first came out !!

DAME CONSOLES HAVE RUINED EVEN THE STAND UP ARCADE'S.. When is the last time a good stand up game came out? Dance Dance Revolution !! Come on, what the fuck is that shit.. Remember SUPER SPRINT. Or the Skateboarding game 720 (SKATE OR DIE!!)

I could care less that the new FOOTBALL GAME lets you grab the crotch of the center or the new hockey lets you drive the fucking ZAMBONE. Or the new baseball game lets you pick your crotch... GAMES TODAY JUST SUCK..

And yes, occassionally there is a brake out game like Grand Theft Auto and Gran Tourismo but even those are mediocre at best..

I could care less about how good the graphics have gotten, or how cute the stupid story boards are. I don't give a shit about the story. I want to GAME.

Sorry about the rant and hijack.

Bline....I too was lost in the landscape of hoohum gaming...but like I said give dawn of war a try it is very good the balance of force management and strategy is very balanced. To be effective you have to use all of your assets. Scouts, Arty, Airborne, Mech...everything. When you play on line the game speeds up like crazy. Any way there is a new dogfight sim Aces High that advertises a 24.7.365 dog fight everyday online...check it out. Welcome to Aces High II

Sorry for the thread bump.. I've been out of town.. That game looks great, like the Air Warrior game from AOL with up to date graphics.. :( it's too bad I am a mac guy now. I haven't upgraded yet to a dual boot mac pro so I can't play it. Hopefully soon.

DAME CONSOLES HAVE RUINED EVEN THE STAND UP ARCADE'S..Some what agree. But cosoles have made video game Non-geek freindly and contributed the fact gaming revenue surpassing the Movie Business in 2000

I love to have a blast on my 67" DLP TV with Surround 7.1 as long as it GOT GAME. I don't give a shit about the story. I want to GAME.I feel your pain, bro. Everything is all corperate now not many breakout games. If you spend sometime with MMRPG you will soon realize that human brains (collective thoughts) are far better than AI(aritificial intelligence.)

I missed the days I worked for a PC Game Maker. Often times work was actually fun. Too bad that I have developed somewhat expensive tastes and not enough time to play.

I was wondering the same thing about when PS3 was gonna come out. I called EBGames yesterday and they said that they'll start taking PS3 deposits probably in Oct.

broknlgs24 08-30-2006 11:54 AM

i've read that it's going to be available
Nov. 17th. who knows?

Technomage 08-31-2006 05:04 PM

im definitely, gonna camp out to get it, I hope it comes out(not another delay). I don't trust pre-orders, just says they'll get you one but not when you'll get it.

Actually EB Games has pre-orders down to a science. I've been doing pre-orders with them for at least 5 years. It actually keeps getting better, so you may want to check it out to be sure that you get one. Its a lot less of a hassle than camping out at Best Buy.

I'm not into console gaming, and I firmly believe that one can always create a PC that will outperform the console in any and every sence but price.

Anyway, the PS3 sure looks better than the PS1 and PS2:
