It's not really the issue of comfort. When the cage is installed in an Impala, or a similar sized car (haven't seen the inside of a Charger yet), there is virtually no leg room in the back, all while the front seats have to be pretty far forward. Many officers (even the ones in good physical shape) have hard time getting in and out of those cars once they are fully geared up - duty belt, holsters, handcuffs, pepper spray, flashlight, baton, vest, etc. Most of the officers I know prefer Crown Vics for that reason. They are also safer than other alternatives.

So why not just saw the legs off the criminals? Will cut down on repeat offenders.

Bad news for Beamer fans. The CHP are phasing out the BMW motorcycles and because they are the biggest in terms of motorcycle fleet, most other agencies are ditching them too. They are switching to Honda ST1300's (1300's, I think). The issue is simply cost. When the BMW's were introduced, BMW gave the CHP, and many other agencies, a sweet deal including maintenance and guaranteed buyback, etc. Well that ran out and the costs had to be footed by the CHP and they balked. It might be that Honda came in and offered a deal the CHP couldn't refuse. That's what Glock has done with their pistols.

Remember when the CHP were testing Volvo S70's? There were a few running around our neck of the woods.
