Any new watches to share?

So just wondering if anyone has anything new on the wrist. I love watches and am always curious to see what everyone is sporting these days..
Go ahead, show it off. Lets see what's on those wrists.

PersonaNonGrata 10-04-2006 02:20 AM

I would but there's no way I can keep up with the likes of you, a true, well funded watch afficienado. You've got some badass wrist candy. (I'm talking about your watches! ;) )

I'm waiting for the right time to buy a Cartier Roadster Chrono. That's about as ambitious as I can get. My brother just got a Daytona and I'm not feeling it, especially for the price. :tsk:

B-Line 10-04-2006 04:30 AM

Kev,

The Cartier Roadster Chrono is a bad ass watch. Are you going with the white or black face?

As far as my collection goes, it has not grown recently and I think I am done buying for a while. Other expenses have popped up (the Turbo did come with a bad ass stopwatch on the dash ;) ) Besides, I only have one wrist. Oh wait, that's not true. I have two wrists. Maybe I'll get a Flavo-Flav neck piece. Then I won't be so white and nerdy. ROTFLOL.

I do however still love to see what people are sporting on the wrists. It's the window shopper inside my head. I still lurk often on the watch forums just to see what everyone's crazy about. Your brothers Daytona is a smart watch. It's a great deal if it was bought at MSRP. I would agree that the premium on the watch is not worth it but to each their own.

There are two pieces that I am lusting after but will not pull the trigger on. One is a 1960 Rolex GMT w/ pepsi dial. Something about the 50 yr. old Rolex's that just screams "cool"..
The other is a watch I had in my hand 3 years ago in the store and did not buy. It has haunted me ever since. It's a Audemars Piguet 2003 Royal Oak City of Sails..

I guess I would consider buying one of these still should I find a primo condition one.. But they fetch big $$$.

But don't it just look cool :)

I've got UN Chrono. The IWC Portugese is the next one.

I have my nice solid Citizen ECO-drive :)

Mine has gold accents instead of blue/silver.

I have the Sinn 756 on my shopping list. I've seen Sinn's in a few watch stores, but not this particular model. I might end up having to order it from the UK. It's a nice clean looking watch with big numerals which is convenient for reading glass wearers like me. It also has a Valjoux 7750 movement.

Audemars Piguet watches are awesome, they are so plain but I just love the look of them. The next watch I buy is a Sports Collection Royal Oak Offshore, I would love the Gem Set though but its a bit too blingy for my needs(also ridiculously expensive). I have a Breitling Navitimer right now as my everyday watch with the black arabic dial with the stainless bracelet.

the head 10-04-2006 10:52 AM

Nice to see people with a love of fine time pieces
Currently I have a few interesting pieces in my collection
4 Breitlings
50th anniversary Navitimer
Chrono Avenger
Aerospace
Chronomat Evoloution dual face

Girrard Perrigaux
Multi time Ferrari Edition

H Stern
Form Stainless

Tissot
Seastar 1000 (my dive watch)

and a few other lower end fashion pieces

ylwjacket 10-04-2006 11:24 AM

I had a nice chrono my wife got me. I can't remember the brand. Had diamonds on the face, and I think mother of pearl face.

At a softball game (coaching my kids), one of the players hit my wrist on a practice swing, and shattered the crystal into 10,000 pieces. Bent the hands and warped the face too (good news is that it probably saved me a broken wrist).

My wife never told me what it cost, but I saw her crying when it happened.

So, at current, I'm wearing a black rubber sports watch I got at Sports Authority. She has another on simliar to the one that got smashed, and I don't know who that was either, but she only lets me wear it when there are no sports activities on the agenda (like on date night).

i wish i could say steel daytona at MSRP ... but instead ... a green bezel rolex sub ... liked the maxi dial and fat hands as opposed to the original sub

See it.. How about we go for a drive in it. Yes, I am coming to WFIV. Don't think I'll be able to stay overnight but I'm going to make the trip up for the day -- My fiancee is in fashion retail and the chance of her getting off both Sat and Sun is unlikely.
I wasn't sure if I was going to drive up in the X or the TT. I guess that decision has been made for me :-)

Nice collection btw.. It that Oris the BMW Williams F1?

Watch's and jewerly is not my thing, would rather spend my money on cars and boats, buts thats me and we all need to do our own thing.

What fancy watch is the best value, I could use a go to meeting watch.

kirkX5m 10-04-2006 03:59 PM

ha ha ha TT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (not enough !)

yah the oris is the williams. i wrote them an email once and they were like um no, we folllow williams, not bmw LOL. i was in paris trying to find the marc webber limited edition one, called about 10 diff paris jewelers and no one had it , so i had to settle for this one. i like it a lot though, wear it every day, comfortable, big enough case and great watch band made out of rubber. plus got detaxed and a nice sale at galleries lafayette, i think it came out to be about 40% cheaper than here!

Hey Blue, that's a tough question. It really depends on your budget.
I would say, for a "professional" "meeting" type watch, you are probably looking at a starting price point of about $5K.
That can get you into a nice Rolex, Panerai, etc.

Now you can also get into a nice Omega for about $3k - $4K but I find Omega's to be more sport oriented and less of a "meeting watch".

However, should you decide to go with a real, real nice "meeting watch" your probably going to have to double the budget to about $10K. That's where you get into the Audemars Piguet, IWC, VC, Patek category.

If your seriously interested, tell me what you would consider spending and I will make some recommendations. Most watches, if you are in the know, can be bought for 30%-35% south of MSRP.

You can also visit this site for a nice overview of HOT watches.

The prices are not accurate and the reviews are not objective, but it's entertaining.

after all of my deliberating (and a couple of threads) I finally got a Breitling Colt Chrono... i'll get pics up tomorrow.

I originally wanted the chronomate evolution chrono but i don't want a 44mm, the colt is 40 and it's pretty damn big.

Gotta say, I'm w/Mr. Blue on this one. Ain't a watch made that floats my boat. I have a $30 watch I've been wearing for about 9 years, changed the battery once, is very accurate, and it looks just fine to me. Just like anything else folks hobby around, I'm sure the appeal's there, but I just don't see it. Can someone point out to me how to tell the difference between a nice watch and my watch? Not trying to be facetious, I really don't know...

Of course, to each their own. Wasn't the owner of Dell computers driving a 1989 Honda Prelude to work for the past 15 years?

There are a number of things that put watches into the "nice watch" category. And not all watches are "nice" for the same reason.

-The first and most obvious "nice" watch factor is the metal it's made in. Obviously a rubber watch is not as "nice" as a "stainless steel" and then "two-tone (gold and SS) and then "Gold", "White Gold" "Platinum".

- The second factor is the quality and reputation of the manufacturer. Like Rolex for example. (Just like BMW, a Honda Pilot does the same job as an X5 but not with the same zest.)

- THE MOVEMENT (what you don't see but makes the watch work.) Generally there are two types of watches made today. A "quartz/battery" operated watch/ and an "automatic" watch which gets it energy from the movement in your hand. Because the "automatic" watch has a complicated movement with lots of technology and moving parts, it is a more "artistic" approach to time keeping. A quartz watch is more durable but is not as highly sought after as the finer time pieces which have the "automatic" movement.

- The next factor on a watch is the obvious, design, durability, function.
- The history of the watch is also important. What was the model designed for? How has it changed over the years?

- Then you start to get more complicated. Just like baseball cards, certain types of sneakers or handbags for women or concert tickets even, there are watches that are high in demand but short in supply. This can be true for both regular production watches and LIMITED EDITION pieces that are quite common and often, very hard to come by. Some of these watches appreciate enormously on the open market and should be considered a commodity.

I know people who have one nice watch and I know people who have 50 and are completely addicted to buying watches. (Many of them have extremely valuable pieces that they bought at MSRP and have now rocketed in demand.)

I think many non watch buyers, view watches the same way they do a digital camera. Like an expandable piece of equipment that should not be spent a lot of money on. Truth is, like diamonds, stocks, art, etc. watch buying is not decadent (usually), you are buying something with value that can be sold with value.

And watch fanatics can usually spot each other out and have a "thing" to talk about. I always notice what is on somebody's wrist. Not because I'm judging their wealth or place in society, I'm not shallow like that. Some of my favorite watches are very inexpensive (in relation to other everyday items.) And if I spot someone wearing a Prevendome Panerai or a Omega Speedy Pro, I know the watch comes with a story.

Also, when I travel, if I ever need to kill some time, watch hunting is always a fun thing to do.

I think you would be very happy with a Rolex Datejust.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...S/16200w-1.jpg

There are other variations of this watch but this is the classic. It has an engine turned bezel and a jubilee bracelet. I'm not sure the MSRP though. It might be a stretch but rest assured, you won't lose much value if you should decide to sell it one day. I can't say the same for most other watches in this price point.
(btw, contact me by PM, I have some contacts and can probably get you some big savings if you want one.) I don't benefit from the sale other than to see you happy.

I hear ya. Fortunately for me I am rarely seen wearing anything but jeans and a T-shirt so I don't worry about shirt cuff's. However, on the occassion I do get "dressed", I never have a problem with my cuff's.
But Gresch, also keep in mind, there is actually very sound logic for today's growing standard. It's a simple reason and owning a few big watches I can testify, it's the smart decision.

The reason is: Big watches are much easier to read. I have very good vision and going back to small watches makes me crazy.

The "big watch" fad has faded big time in NYC, and i'm pretty happy about it, I didn't want to spend $4k on a watch that I hated just to be "in style" anyway....

and Gresch, don't know if I agree with you on the big watch fad being over. Offshore's, Panerai's, etc. are still flying off the shelves as is the IWC Big Pilot, etc.
I would say, 40mm is the smallest watches still being purchased with the average tettering somewhere around 43. Both Panerai and AP are still making special addition watches that no one can keep in stock like the Polaris, Barichello, Panerai Subzilla's and even the new Ferrari theme'd watches (not my taste.)

And even the Jaeger, Bell and Ross, etc. are all still doing very well with big watches.
Rolex seems to be the only watch manufacturer that is not putting out big watches.

I don't think big"er" watches is a fad. You will not see the average going back to the 36mm and 38mm our parents and grandparents wore.

Not sure what you're basing that statement on (except that I assume you have a Breitling, not a Tag), but I heartily disagree. Both are outstanding brands. I own both, and my Breitling has always had a slightly off-center (and "slippery" - always sliding around so it was out of whack) bezel and the winding stem is very tough to turn, whereas my Tag works flawlessly and smoothly. As a result, my Breitling sits in a drawer, whereas my Tag (see photo) is on my wrist constantly, and is the best watch I've ever had. Here's the Tag I own:

Both Tag and Breitling and Omega for that matter have some VERY good watches and some not so great watches.
What is nice about the not so great watches is they all have pieces that are readily affordable. They can make a nice gift for a nephew who is graduating high school or something like that and they are not too over the top expensive.

But all those brands also have some very, very high end watches.

B, B, B, see what you've started. :tsk: Now I've been cruising watch sites looking at all the wrist bling I can't afford. Unfortunately I come from a family of watch snobs and I'm the only one who can't throw down. I've got some Tags, a Rolex Oyster, and some assorted a-little-better-than-novelty stuff. I recently bought a Tissot on a whim. That's still cheap stuff.

My favorite watch is this Omega Seamaster circa 1950's. It's not worth much in terms of dollars but it belonged to my grandfather who I never met. I have worn it a few rare times but I decided it's better to keep this one locked away.

When I'm ready for my black faced Roadster Chrono I'll look to you for the sweet hookup. ;)

B-Line 10-05-2006 02:35 AM

LoL,

Sorry Kev. From now on I will keep my watch posts to the watch boards. I don't want to see you sell your body on Santa Monica Blvd. to finance a new Cartier.
However, I do know of a sperm bank that will give you a handsome salary for what may be considered minimal work..lol..

That Seamaster is very, very sweeeet. Any watch with a story gets major brownie points in my book. And knowing that you may give it to your grandson one day makes it all that much cooler.

-- On a sad note, I'm not actually sure I have any hook up's for Cartier. I'm sure if I made enough calls I could probably find you a top deal and it would be my pleasure to do so when your ready... But off hand, I'm not sure what type of "room" those watches have. I would not buy it from a Cartier Boutique, that's for sure. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it...

And just remember, what makes a watch special is not the cost. It's the story that comes with it. Like having it shoved up the ass of a Vietnam POW for 15 years.. :)

and Gresch, don't know if I agree with you on the big watch fad being over.

B

that might be true in LA, but here in the fashion center of the universe (NYC) the big watches ain't so big anymore :) I work with some big money people (consequences of working at a broker/dealer) and there are very few "big watches anymore, very few. Besides, LA is always 6 months to a year behind NYC anyway :) (i'm joking btw)

Also, maybe we should make sure we're talking about the same thing, by "big" i mean diameter and height like a breitling chronomat evolution chrono, not just diameter.

Gresch, I unfortunately have to wear suits almost everyday as well and although I think its rediculous to have all of my shirts custom made, I do have a few. The beauty of the custom made shirts is that they made my watch cuff a little larger than my other cuff. That way I can wear my Breitling under the cuff or above the cuff...when life throws you curve balls just sit back on 'em smash them over the wall. :)

Here's my current everyday watch, it's a Breitling Emergency. Although a large watch, it's surprisingly light due to the titanium construction.

I also have a Breitling Navitimer, with brown leather strap, a Maurice Lacroix (not sure of the model), Tag Link and a couple of older watches that need some attention.

It so glad to see so many of us like great time pieces. My collection is not too great by any means, but it satisfies my craving.

I am big on Corum pieces. Love the limited quanity they produce and how unique they are. Surprized that I didnt see any up on this thread.

Ah im glad to see we have some fellow watch afficienatos. I only have 2 currently but am always looking to add more but its to damn expensive of a hobby. I currently have a Breitling Bentley 30 second chrono and a Panerai 187 submersible. The Panerai is the newest and i love it even though its to thick to wear wth dress shirts i still love it.

X5-RWK 10-31-2006 12:24 AM

Here is my 2 cents.

I have had the stainless only Rolex for 17 years, the gold and stainless Rolex is about as old as the stainless one but I have only had it about a year. They were both used and both manufactured in the early 80's. I just had the stainless one serviced by Rolex and it cost almost a grand. It had never been in to be done and even when I sent it in it was working perfectly. I just did not want to wait for it to stop working before sending it in.

I also have a 187 iluvspl.. It's one of my favorites and gets a ton of wrist time. I am waiting for my WWII ammo patch strap that is being made for me by BigB. Every day I keep checking the mail to see if it came.. It has not yet. The 187 is a monster of a watch. I would never want to own anything bigger than 47mm.
Check out this site for a awesome 187 strap:
