Displaying your License Plate on X5World Question

If a person decides to post pictures of their vehicle on this site should they block out the License plate? What are the pros and cons? :dunno:

I think that, for the most part, people elect to block out their license plate numbers. The biggest reason is for privacy purposes, I suppose... that's why I do it, at least. For those of you that have met me in person it doesn't matter, but as Andy Garcia said in ocean's eleven ... there's always somebody watching .... (you just don't know who it is)

This may be the reason

Not all have to spend that money......some out there already have that kind of access.

I could care less about posting my plate but I will explain why others might:

Some, especially those in the sports car world, who track their car or street race their car or mod their car, etc. Know that manufacturers like Porsche, Audi, etc. use certain cites as EVIDENCE against claimaints in legal proceedings.
As such, people who post to the board, wish their cars identity not be easy to trace as anything they say may be used against them in court. YES, THIS DOES HAPPEN.
So hiding things like the license plate, prevents lawyers and researchers from using online information against a defendant or plantiff.

For example. Now this isn't exactly a "plate" issue but it's close enough. Recently in the Porsche community, some guy who raced his car in AutoX and did track days was having a problem with his car that Porsche would not fix. His engine exploded or something. But Porsche knew he raced his car in AutoX and tracked it. So they denied his claim for a new free engine. Porsche knew because he used his name, and car info when he registered for the AutoX event and it was published on a website with his race time.
So the guy sued Porsche and when he went to deposition, Porsche had found this guys times and scores from his autoxing, to prove that he was using the vehicle for racing. They also had posts from discussion boards, etc. And it was evidence they used against him.

Now some people argue that if he was racing, he should not have sued Porsche for a new engine. Right or wrong, that's not even the point here. The point is, a lawyer, a police officer, anybody for that matter, can use the stuff we say on this site or any other site against us.

So lets say for example you admit that you were doing 120mph on PCH on Wed. night. then Thursday you should get into an accident with another car and the driver of other car decides to sue you. His lawyer, if he's any good, might decide to try to "look you up" on the car boards. And can use whatever you have said against you in court. ANd they can even prove that you have stated you have a history of speeding.

Now posting your license plate is a way for someone to track you or prove that it's you if you get my point.

-- Btw, never speed.. Keep it on the track :)
