I say if you REALLY want to offroad the H2 isn't really that good, its just a glorified Tahoe, get a Land Cruiser or Lx470 those are true off roaders, their proven and fit in parking spaces :P

Also I dont plan on keeping the big rims on when I go off-roading, imagine what 24's would look like in 2ft of mud lol |
LOL plenty of people I know own them and I've driven them, their not that great at all, you cannot park them, their not that good offroad, the interior plastics look like something out of Rubbermaid and they will kill anything they hit, their total vanity cars end of story
|
If you want a car that is really good at offroading its not an H2, a Land Cruiser will kick its ass anyday and its a much more useful car
|
I would also like to thank Derek and BMW X5 for the help!!

If you want something for off-road, I would recommend the new Land Rover LR3.
|
My bro had his Escalade stolen so he rented a H2 for a couple weeks. I drove it and here are my impresions:
Interior space: although the car is huge, when I sat in it, i didn't have much more wiggle and comfort room than my X5. Storage with the extra tire inside was also limited. Back seats were huge though. Because of alot of the design elements, a lot of the view is obstructed when you drive because of some weird things that stick out on the vehicle. It drives like a four cylinder Toyota Camry. No really. It has no "go" and it tkaes up a lot of lane space. Not good if you drive tight roads or park in small areas. Brakes like a pig. Inside feels cheap. People and other cars do get out of it's way, especailly when it's a speed yellow color. (I called it the school bus.) -- I am overall, not a fan.. I wanted to like it but could not. I felt it was obnixous just for the sake of being obnixous. The huge size did not beneift in utility space or comfort. B btw, my bro is replacing his Escalade with a Supercharged Range Rover.. Now that's a vehicle !!! I call it the X7 because it really was designed by BMW. |
All suvs are top heavy get a friggin clue (BMW X5), The Lr3 would be way more top heavy then the Land Cruiser, its a proven vehicle , they use them throughout the world because they are just that good, the H2 is a vanity car, nuff said The RR would be a good offroader with the air suspension but the Land Cruiser will run right with it because both from what I know have mutiple locking differentials and a height control air suspension
|
if you REALLY want an offroad vehicle, the Hummer is NOT the vehicle for the job, their are much better cars out there

I had an H2 for a bit definately NOT an off-road vehicle underpinning is the same as a 2500 suburban they are extremely underpowered for thier size and weight plus as is common with the CV IFS systems on american trucks the turning radius is terrible so if you are planning on any trail work it will drive you nuts....Personally the land rover discovery would be a good choice they are very abundent (given a production run starting in early 90's through the LR3 intro two years ago) relativly nimble and a great all terrain vehicle as well...just dont try to pull them by the brushguard (usually mounted to bumper not frame) and they do great! The LR3 is great as well (Had one for a loaner while my S600 was in the shop) but I have no expierence with them off road. Also if you want to do big wheels I know yokohama and toyo (possibly others) make mud terrain tires in up to a 22 now
|
I am by no means an off road expert but it seems to me if one is serious about it the the only vehicle i have ever seen that fits offroad needs is a Toyota land cruiser.

Land cruisers and the land rovers have been built for rough terrain look at the UN and european military vehicles you will see a lot of both |

Toyota FJ (the new ones) Wranglers (somewhat) H1's That's about it |
Seems to be the principal means of transport in Africa as well. But i suppose they may be custom made for that application.

Told you, the Land Cruiser is a PROVEN off road vehicle, it had long pulled and proven how good it is at what it does

Dude... tone it down. Blondboi simply expressed his opinion. No reason to give him the finger. Let's be civil here...

Folks, we are coming dangerously close to personal insults, an act that is not tolerated here.
Let's keep it civil and respectful. thanks, Juan |
BMW X5: My daily driver is a 96 Landcruiser with 31s, man-a-fre lift kit and ARB bull bars....... and I do go off-roading about 10 times a year (cuz I ain't a poseur), and my baby performs very well.........mud in my blood.....

I think the H1 has to be the best off road SUV.
The only draw back would be its size. |

Trying to get back on track, I'd like some input as well, I'm thinking about getting an H2, no I do not offroad, so I do not care that. Either that or I've been eyeing a silver 300C SRT8.
|
If don't go off road why get a H2?
If you need a really big SUV get the new Suburban or GMC Denali. If you want something smaller, and in a class of its own, get the 2007 X5. |
Because I can? I didn't realize I had to buy a vehicle based on function alone. The X5 is basically worthless, I can fit more into our RX300 and it has a way better nav system despite being a year older.
|
i'm sorry but rx300 is a jackedup Camry, no way it'll drive like an X5. i doubt you can fit more in it than the X5, if you flip down the back seats in the x5
as far as the H2, don't buy it. H2 is absolutely nothing special besides how it looks. it's not a good offroader at all, don't believe all the marketing hoopla, that's just smart marketing from GM to sell a Tahoe with different skin for 20k more than it's worth. second of all, if you have a bimmer, now even a 90s model has a better interior than cheap plastic the hummer has. not to mention, handling, breaking, cornering, oh ya you do know real world is about 8mpg city right? if you want an offroader get a G500, 3 locking diffs, neck in neck with H1 best offroaders if you want a grocery go getter and be bored out of your mind, won't have to worry about little quirks, get an RX300 if you have a billion kids that you haul around all day, join every other mother on the block and get a Suburban if you want a grocery go getter, a performer, an all around do it all, one that has a soul, get an X5 ps: one thing H2 got going for it though, you can fit 26's on there, you can't do that on X5, Rx300, etc. /end sarcasm |
The 2007 X5 is a second generation design.
It is larger and has more storage area that can also be used as a third seat. Don't know why you would want a H2? I still think the GMC Denali is a better choose if want a really big SUV. |
This demonstrates wonderfully what the H2 is (at least in my mind).

My business partner has an H2. He likes it fine. He got headers and exhaust added to it.
After he did that, I tuned it for him (using EFI live - OK I had it tuned, then tweaked it a bit). After 3 years, he's hot now for a Range Rover Supercharged. He's never had any problems with the Hummer, other than he likes a new car every couple of years, and it's about that time. |
As this is a long thread, I forgot who made the comment, but someone said the Land Rover is "top heavy". It definately looks top heavy, but you would be surprised. I was considering it when I got my X5, and that big tall LR3 handles very well around turns -- almost no body lean.
If you go to their website and watch some of the off-road videos there, you would see what it's capable of. It has something new called the "Terrain Response System" which is like a traction system that has 5 or 6 settings, one for each type of surface: Ice, Mud, Rock/Boulder, On-Road, etc. It adjusts the gearing, braking, traction control, and even the suspension settings to optimize for each type of surface. http://www.rangerovers.net/miscimage...terrespon1.JPG Also, each wheel has some rediculous amount of suspension travel in the "Rock/Boulder" setting -- I think something like 13 inches. I think the clearance under the car is also something like 10 inches. And the air intake on the car is up high on the side, so it can drive through up to 2 feet of water without any problems -- they make a point of saying this in the brochure. I decided on the X5 because i never go off-road so all that stuff did not matter to me, but I remember thinking that if I did go off-road, the LR3 was the car for me and none of the others would have even been close. http://www.rockcrawler.com/reviews/l.../mike_tilt.jpg http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/i...0418045979.jpg http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/i...0418050035.jpg You should definately check it out. |

[QUOTE=x54.4blue]Great photos can you tell us about the specs on the army HMV?
I thought originally they were suppose to have gas turbine but ended up was a diesel which results in it being under powered?[/QUOTE the ARMY up armorer humvee it is turbo diesel i think if im not mistakin it is about 140 hp but is a lot faster than the non turbo engine which it is slow with the turbo charge i was able to reach about 75 mph driving throght the city of baghdad non stopping at any traffic light at all. it was fun but scary too because u never know where they hide then IED`s. |

They constantly bash american cars by criticising their functionality in ways that they weren't designed for. I love that show, but they're so damn anti-US cars it's ridiculous. Gee, let's take a really wide h1 down extremely narrow streets and call it shit. If they owned a panel van would they do the same thing? Let's floor the H2 and watch the MPG gauge go to 1. Hey, do the same thing on an X5 and the MPG gauge goes to 1 too... morons. Let's drive an H2 like a sports car and see how it handles. Ok, let's drive an F430 and see how much it can haul. When they reviewed the C6Z06 it kicked ass in the performance categories and wound up #3 on the board for their test track, ahead of many many euro exotics, yet those buffoons still wouldn't give it any praise... they just walked around it banging on the body panels going "plastic, fiberglass, plastic..." and scowling.... pssst, what SHOULD they have made the car out of to reduce weight? Carbon Fiber? and sold 100 cars because the price would be astronimical to buy AND repair? pfffft They completely biased and always slant their stories. This is America, if someone wants to buy a Chevy Cobalt, an H1 or H2, a Ferrari or a Vdub, so be it, who cares, it's their choice. When the neighbors with an opinion start helping with the monthly car payment, I'll pay attention to their opinion on what i drive.... until then.... not gonna happen. |

If you really want a BIG suv go get yourself a 04' or 05' Ford Excursion w/6.0 Turbo Diesel. I owned a 04 and it was one of the best vehicles I owned not to mention I got on average 19 MPG in the city and over 24 MPG on the highway.
|
I think if you're getting a big SUV and you want to go offroading, you can do better by getting something like an LR3, Touareg, etc. They're about the same money, easier to park, drive better, and are great off-road. The Touareg can go anywhere an H2 can.. Especially with the air suspension and locking differentials. The interior of the H2 is horrible. I sat in one recently. I felt like I was in a coffin. The inside is just black plastic, with nothing to break it up. The build quality is abysmal, and the panel gaps are huge. If you're paying $55,000 plus for an SUV, don't you want to get your money's worth? I'd go with a Land Rover or a Touareg. And I know they've got reliability issues, but Land Rover is improving. And, Hummer is GM, and we all know about how great GM's quality is  My friend has an '06 LR3.. Not a single problem yet.
