I am always astounded at the number of Camry's and Corolla's sold in my country. I never realised this madness extended to the rest of the world, is there something about the cars (in particular the Corolla as we do not have the new Camry here) that I am missing. I have driven them many times as rentals and never been anything but happy to hand it back.

The "madness" is indeed everywhere...The "something" you might be missing about these cars, is the fact that that Corolla you rented will probably still be on the road 250,000 miles from now, with the same engine, and with not too much maintenance under its belt....Not too many other cars you could say that about...Except for Honda maybe...

Blah The Camry puts me to sleep, talking about sucking the fun right out of the drive, good reliability vs performance, fun and questionable reliability, i'll take number 2 every time

For some people, a Camry or a Corolla is the best that they can afford and are happy to have a car that will last them 100,000 miles. I have to remind myself of that whenever I think of bashing an econo-box.

Camry? Boring! I don't think that's a good choice for car of the year. True, Camrys are very good, safe, reliable, economical cars. But they've been around forever, and aside from adding a hybrid, this generation is nothing special. If they wanted to name an economical car as COTY, why not the Benz E320 BLUETEC? Performs well, tons of torque, and better gas mileage than a Mini Cooper! 37 on the highway, over 700 miles on one tank..

I've always liked Camrys (and Accords). Great all around cars! Reliable, good gas mileage, economical. I really appreciate them for what they are, however, I personally prefer a bit more power (I assume like most on this forum). But I don't have anything negative to say about them, probably the best all-around cars you can get.

I know many people with Camrys who could easily afford more expensive cars, but that's not a priority for them. Reliability versus fun (and expense), I understand that position.

Bottom line, I don't hate on great cars, there are a lot more variables out there beyond performance for some.

Camry are tasteless to drive in my opinion however there is no question that they are amoung the most reliable cars. If you want more luxury and still the same reliability you get a Lexus. If you want luxury and have fun driving then you get a BMW but you have to accept that you will have to go to the garage from time to time. The pleasure I get every day from driving my X or 3 serie over any japanese car superseds the inconvenience of needing more maintenance. My opinion anyway.
