Long Winded, but "simple" A/V Question...
 

I need to get an A/V "receiver", CD changer, etc. to get our
system going here in the FL Bunker.

All I want is, to be able to run current Sony SXRD TV sound
through non-TV speakers. And, run receiver audio, eg CDs,
tuner, through those same speakers.

Those speakers will be cheapazz pair of sats w/a center speaker,
(don't give a damn about "rears" or sub; have them in the Mtn.
house and could not care less.)

I am not looking to spend a bundle and I am not after big name
high end stuff: a decent receiver, eg Yamaha, Sony, Onkyo et al,
3 speakers and a CD Changer, will do fine. Am not a room rumbling
movie junkie...

In digging, I see most of the A/V "receivers" do not offer HDMI
in/out until one gets to the $700 and up range. Does this really
matter if I don't have HDMI in/out? All I want is TV sound to
come out of non-TV speakers and use those same speakers for
casual listening of music.

I do have an HDMI cable from Comcrap's fancy HD-DVR box and an
HDMI cable from my Samsung dedicated DVD player, currently.

I am trying to avoid biggie buck receiver and still hook it properly,
so I don't screw up the vid feed from Box to TV, yet grab the TV
feed sound to run through speakers....

sorry if this neophyte description is more complex than the freakin
question or, answer.

I dug around on the A/V forum, but this kind of question requires
reading an encyclopediac list of posts or, getting bombed for asking
this kind of question.
Any comments/opins/ideas are welcome.

JVC digital amplifiers all have HDMI switching and they start at about 250 or 300 dollars go up to about 500 for the top end unit sound is excellent I just put one in my garage at home and with the EV audio speakers I installed I can piss off most of my neighbors even with my garage door closed

I guess my hidden question is: do I "care" that an A/V rec.
does not have HDMI connections?

All I wanna do is run TV sound, (not throbbing, booming
movie sound), through an add on Ctr channel and 2 R/L sats
and mabye run another pair of speakers out on my lanai.

Thus, do I really need/care that any given recevier does not
have HDMI connects?

I use an older (about two now) marantz amp without HDMI in my theater and I really like it you can transmit up to a 1080i signal on component video cables unless you are going bluray or HD-DVD HDMI is not really needed all of my current gear (dvd changer with 1080 upconvert, ps2, Xbox 360) are hooked up via component video cables I cant tell the difference when they are on HDMI or on component vid so I stick with component that way I can keep my amp and not have to change to some other amplifier

MD, you don't need HDMI switching if you never plan to run your video sources through your receiver. If I understand your needs, you plan to run the video sources directly to the TV and manually switch inputs on the TV. With only two video sources, that is totally reasonable.

I assume this is what you want to do:

Run DVD video to TV
Run DVD audio to rec'r
Run cable box video to TV
Run cable box audio to rec'r

If that is right, you have no need for HDMI switching.

I suggest Pio 1016 for bang/buck ratio. For under $380 at Onecall.com it is tough to beat for features and sound quality. Google that one or check avsform. There are also several different HK's, Onk's, and Yammy's in the sub $500 bracket that will meet/exceed your needs. Happy shopping :thumbup:

You don't need hdmi switching. Check out Onkyo receivers: exceptional sound quality for the money.

Check out cnet for reviews. The prices they list are almost always higher than what you can get them for.
