First suicide bombing...

Interesting article below. I bet you didn't know the origins of the first suicide bombing attack in the Mulsim world....

I knew the origins of the Marine Corps :)
And I also knew about this, benefits of your father being a life long US History teacher. However, this is probably one of the few recent articles on the topic so I wouldn't be too shocked that people are in the dark. Though, in regards to the article I fail to make a comparison to how swearing a oath of office on the Quran and not the Bible have anything to do with the founding of the United States. There is one obvious element that seems to have escaped our Muslim friend, the US Dollar says "In God We Trust", not Allah.

Personally I don't see a problem with this guy being sworn in using a Quran instead of a Bible. The truth is that if one does not believe in the Bible, then swearing them in using that book does not mean a damn thing. Am I wrong?

But anyway, that's not why I posted the article. I found it on google news last night and it had a bunch of history in there that I found very interesting.

Way to go. Just because the Hapton Roads newspaper calls it a suicide bombing doesn't make it one.

Since you're so fond of WW2 comparisons, here's one:

If that was a suicide bombing, then so were the Kamikazis during WW2.

Quick tip: neither were. Now see if you can figure out why.

Actually, the Marine Corps' origin was about 30 years prior.

What are the first two lines of the Corps hymn:

From the halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli'

Jefferson knew that place would be a problem for years to come :tsk:

---

1775, November 10th - The Continental Marines are created

1776, March - Nicholas' Marines land on New Providence Island, Bahamas. In 13 days they secure 2 forts, occupy Nassau, control the Government House, seize 88 guns, 16,535 shells and other supplies. Returning from the raid, they encountered a British ship. Marines engaged the ship with muskets and assisted in manning the broadside cannon.

1776, December - Nicholas' Marines assist Washington's Army in the second battle of Trenton (the first recorded joint Army-Marine engagement). Later that spring, Washington incorporated some of the Marines in to artillery units of his reorganized Army

1778, January - Marines sail down the Mississippi and secure New Orleans to keep British traders out.

1778, April - A Marine detachment under the command of John Paul Jones makes two raids on Great Britain soil (the 1st in 700 years).

1783, January - Marines board and seize the British ship Baille in the West Indies

1785, June - after the end of the American Revolutionary War (Jan, 1783), the last of the nations warships are sold. The Continental Marines go out of existence, along with the Navy.

First suicide "bombing" was probably done in china shortly after discovering gun powder.

After 18 years active duty, thanks for the history lesson.

Now, in all seriousness, we stupid Jarheads ignore the portion of time where Congress irrationally decided to (temporarily) disband my beloved Corps. We consider our history to be a long, unbroken line.

So, as I said, it wasn't the "origin," but rather one of many notable parts of the history of the Corps (as captured in the first verse in my beloved Hymn - note the captial "H").

Thanks for educating the masses, though!

I assumed you knew brother ;)

Most people don't know a thing about the military when they comment on it. Nice to have some actual representation here.
