floor update
 

well.. i paid out of my own pocket to get the damaged wood floors removed and put down new carpet.

i'm engaging with a construction specialist to determine if i can collect from the contractor. its already a slam dunk case since there is no moisture test conducted/results. but can i collect... that is the question...

anyways, here's some pics of the damage that shows how wet the slab is, even during these "dry" days lately...

to bad u had some realy nice floors..........

Adam - that's really a shame to see those nice hardwood floors being ripped out. I hope you are able to reach some sort of satisfactory outcome with the contractor.

One question about the carpet. Won't the same moisture problem that damaged the hardwood floors be a problem for the carpet as well? It seems to me that the carpet would quickly mold and mildew given those conditions. :dunno:

Looks like Godzilla is about to emerge from your subfloor in that one pic. Good luck with it, man. Hold them accountable if the law allows!

WOW.....first, I can't even imagine what that floor cost. It's fabulous... Secondly, HOLY BUCKLING....that is crazy. I'm really sorry to see this. I hope everything turns out in your favor Adam.

the house was built in 1991 and always had carpet until last year. no sign of mildew or deterioration in the foam crush pad when it was removed for the wood floors last year.

my guess is that although the slab discharges quite a bit of moisture, the foam and carpet is not air/water tight and allows the moisture to evaporate right through.

when the wood planks were layed down, a moisture sealant was rolled on, glued trowed on and then the wood planks. that creates more of an air tight/water tight barrier and didn't allow the moisture to go anywhere else up eventually into the wood and made them expand till they buckled and lifted.

just a guess on why i didn't see any mold/mildew when it was ripped out.

well... the house is for sale as we were looking to move somewhere between my office and the bosses' med school so her commute wasn't too long on her.

we'll see what the contract is willing to do... i really liked those floors too...

thanks for the compliments everyone, but this is the last time i do wood floors. last house had the pergo laminate and it started to buckle too (again from faulty contractor installation). I'm only doing tile downstairs from now on.

Those wood floors are beautiful.....I'll miss them....well, there is always room for a sequel! ;)

I hope that you are able to recoup your costs, and get this matter resolved to your satisfaction, hopefully short of litigation. Perhaps arbitration or some other form of alternative dispute resolution is available? The best case scenario would be for you to receive compensation -- and actually collect on a judgment -- while avoiding the aggravation, expense, and investment of time required for a lawsuit.

Maybe Josh’s friend or the other local person with expertise and experience in this area that you mentioned can help you facilitate an efficient satisfactory resolution. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance, but this is way out of my area.
