Looking for a cheap Laptop
 

I am looking for a cheap laptop to do mainly basic office tasks like word processing, spreadsheet, internet surfing, etc...
What do you guys think about this deal? Is ACER a good brand for Laptop?

Acer is a pretty good brand. I have had good luck with them. Try www.tigerdirect.com they have some pretty good deals.

another vote for acer from me... but only because you said "cheap". If you wanted a workhorse that would last forever, I'ld recommend a Thinkpad.

I got a compaq open box buy from Frys for 599 or something 12/05 it had an AMD duel processor and 512 mb or something, so far it has been a great pc minus the underpowered fan

I agree with you on the Thinkpad. I can actually get discounted Thinkpads through my company however even with the discount a similar Thinkpad is about $200 more. This Laptop will not travel, will mainly be used as a spare laptop (there are already 4 desktops plus my personal T43 Thinkpad at home) by my wife and kids to do basic tasks so it does not justify the $200 difference. I had bad experience with cheap HP and Compaq before and will not got with these brands anymore.

I found a deal the other day for a Dell 12.1" for $799.00. Let me know if you are interested, then I will search when I get home. If not I will save the trouble. It was $1428 I believe before the discount.

I hear what you are saying. I actually got the Office Depot cheap Compaq special for my 9-year old to play with and it does everything pretty well. The best part is that now when he gets viruses on his computer, it's not on mine anymore :) It has the same spec as the Acer at a sustantially lower price.

That's a heck of a deal with a printer! Wow, good find!
