Simon Suspended Indefinitely pending hearing
Chris Simon of the NY Islanders swung his stick at Ryan Hollweg on the Rangers last night and hit him right in the face, an inch or 2 lower and it would have been in the throat.
the dbag just got himself suspended indefinitely without pay. Hit: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ht6RyAI9370 Story http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=199406&hubname= oh, and the rangers scored on the ensuing powerplay and won the game, which Hollweg said was the best revenge. The hit was worse than McSorely on Brashear.... |
I saw that on the news earlier. Total clothesline!! That MFer should be banned forever!!!!!!!!!! Holy crap, that could kill someone!
|
I saw it on the news this morning. It looked like he went right for the throat. Dirtbag
|
Kick his sorry a$$ out of the league. Makes me want to update the Potvin S*cks chant to the 21st Century!
|
There are actually Islander fans on hockey boards saying that it's the refs fault because they didn't call a boarding penalty on Hollweg about 10 seconds earlier.... which btw, was not a penalty. I can't believe that some fans are trying to justify it. (in their defense, there are pleny of Islander fans saying Simon deserves a huge suspension, 1 guy actually apologized to Rangers fans for the other Islander fans)
The worst thing about it is that hockey gets a bad rep because when stuff like this happens non-fans see it.... |

Yup, can his ass forever! That is so uncalled for! |
Not only should they can him.. They should stick his ass in jail for assault.

Pretty ugly, and the 24/7 news guys show it ad nauseum. No xpert but I've been watching NHL hockey since the mid 50s, and I thought the usual batches and runs of thuggery had been weeded out via the new rules and methods. Let 'em skip the rest of the season and make 'em sweat until next Turkey Day w/o pay. Long winters in Wawa, Ont., CDA. |
Simon's stupidity also was 3 years to the day after Todd Bertuzzi almost landed Dominic Moore's big brother Steve in a wheelchair the rest of his life.

ok, i do apologize, but the 1st thing that popped into my head
was American Idol when i read ur thread topic. i do apologize. feel free to flame. i deserve it.!ouch:  |
It was dumb at best.

Yet another bit of bad news for hockey in terms of violence. The "semi-clean" hit Neil put on Drury last month that ended in an all on ice fight. Drury got his butt handed to him, but he wasn't skating with his head up. Big open ice hit... finished the check, didn't leave his feet... the kinda hit Scott Stevens put on forwards who skated with their heads down.
Either way, none of this stuff is good for the NHL right now. As for Simon, I ALWAYS hated that goon. Talk about a worthless player. Looking back, I wonder where the Dave Brown cross check on Tomas Sandstrom and the Ron Hextall slash on Chris Chelios fall on the "what kind of hit was that" scale. [edit] Just watched the preceding hit... Hollweg not only left his feet, but Simon was facing the boards. Did not look like a clean hit to me. Either way, no excuse for what Simon did. God I hate that guy. |
Since the strike I have lost interest.

Moore isn't stuck in a wheelchair..... he's actually contemplating a comeback. |

I watched again... bad angle the first time I saw. He was still moving his feet to finish the check which gave the impression of leaving... my bad. I still question if it was boarding. Don't care though... I hate Simon and would have liked it better if the hit knocked him out. |

The Sandstrom hit was horrible. I also think the Bernie Nichols crosscheck to the face of Alex Kovalev in 1994 (was it 94?) was pretty ugly as well. |

you are correct, my bad. I just heard on XM NHL 204 that they're thinking about arresting Simon. |
The NHL has already responded, suspending Islanders forward Chris Simon indefinitely. However, the Nassau County district attorney is looking into the incident from Thursday's Rangers-Islanders game at the Coliseum.
|
Wow. I just watched the video. As a Canucks fan I have followed both the Bertuzzi-Moore thing and the McSorley-Brashear thing but this one is in a league of it's own. Just considering this incident, without comparison to other incidents, I can't imagine anything more blatant. It was flat out a deliberate attempt to use the stick as a weapon to hurt Hellweg. Simon lined him up and sung hard at him with the shaft of the stick. It wasn't like the stick came up along with hands in a punch. It was like he was swinging a kendo stick. It was vicious. I would go out on a limb and say it was more deliberate and more vicious than Bertuzzi's attack on Steve Moore. The difference is that I really don't think Bertuzzi meant to cause the degree of injuries he did. I think he meant to beat Moore with his fists.
What should happen to Simon? He should definitely be suspended for the rest of the season and beyond, including the entire next season, at a minimum. A lifetime ban from NHL hockey? Probably. I don't think that has ever been done before. McSorley's suspension pretty much ended his career due to his age but that doesn't count. If the NHL is going to ban someone for life, is this the incident that should set the precedent? I don't have an answer. I'm just thinking out loud. As far as criminal charges go, that's another ball of wax altogether. Thoughts? |
I agree with everything you said.

No way you can defend what Simon did, but that puke Hollweg has a history of hitting from behind.
Anyone see the hit he put on Umberger last year when he almost broke his neck? KARMA has funny was of paying you back. |
Quote:
1 hit on RJ Umberger does not mean he has a "history" of hitting from behind, as in he does not do it all the time. Right before Hollweg hit Umberger, Umberger turned his back, was it a bad penalty? Sure, and Hollweg took the suspension and it was over. Neither of those 2 things warrants Simon swinging his stick at him. Hollweg is one of the cleanest and hardest hitters in the game, pound for pound. You're the first hockey fan i've ever spoken to that takes issue with him and I'm surrounded by Philthy, Swamprat and pIsles fans every day  |

Chris Simon used to be a Capital and he was the enforcer then, but never as nasty as this incident:damn: |
Quote:
Again I can't condone what Simon did. There's just no way to excuse it, but Flames fans and players out here in Calgary don't exactly think Hollweg is the "cleanest and hardest hitters in the game." http://calsun.canoe.ca/Sports/Hockey...36358-sun.html Don't forget that we have Dion Phaneuf who hits them "Face to Face". |

When the author of that article correctly identifies Hollweg as being on the RANGERS, I'll take him and his opinions seriously :) :) "That said, they weren't nearly as condemning as the NHL brass that banished the New York Islanders tough guy for at least the remainder of the season and any playoffs -- miniumum 25 games -- for his vicious high slash on New York Islander Ryan Hollweg Thursday night ." I watch almost every Rangers game either live or on "Rangers in 60" replay, and I watch the Islanders, Devils and Flyers as often as I can, , and I have center Ice so I watch a fair amount of hockey, it's safe for me to say that Hollweg is not a dirty player (i've watched him his entire career) Trust me I'm a fan of the game, I'm no fanboy, I'm too old for that crap. Was 25 games a lot? Yup. But that was one dirty play by Simon, and the fact that Hollweg wasn't more seriously injured was just damn lucky for Hollweg AND Simon. Would you and the Calgary fans have the same opinion or think the suspension was more justified if Hollweg had been more seriously injured? Just some food for thought... |
