Of course, this will mean that ABS will have to be standard as well. The law goes into effect on '09 MY cars and trucks (that weigh >10,000lbs) Brands that make less than 5,000 cars a year will have additional time to phase it in. It will cost automakers $111 per abs equiped vehicle to implement the system. GM and Ford have said all 2008 MY cars wll have it standard, beating the deadline.

EDIT: The Edmunds article seems to be incorrect. THIS article is correct. ESC will be standard by 2012.

what the damn US government should be mandating is a more comprehensive driving test.. Who needs electronic nannies when you know how to handle a car yourself??

I agree, but good driving skills are a good base but for those who are just bad at driving no matter what they do, or for the person who lacks common sense....ex: the 17 year old kid driving his mustang GT with high performance summer tires in the dead of winter, or the little old lady in her buick century who takes a corner too fast, etc...so just be thankful that the electronics saved them from crashing into you......and, for the brands that have customers that actually know how to drive, (BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, Aston, etc.) there's always the disable button for it....so just think of it as for those whose driving skills aren't up to ours....:thumbup:
(besides, it saved my ass once when I clipped a snow pile that I didn't see pulling out of my driveway, and the system went bezerk, didn't let me slide onto incoming traffic, which would have been baaad. :D)

I say we just have a stricter and more stringent tests for drivers' licenses. Teach them how to drive in dry and slippery conditions. Much more useful than testing a 3-point turn.........
