I have been using VXA data storage units for a long time I just jacked a small VXA320 for my home use...as for oxidazation etc I have never had a problem with it...and I have tape files we had to pull for data research that were from 1990
there are risks with any type of storage CDs can get scratched and the estimated archival time is so variable it becomes difficult to assume whether or not your pictures will still be there.
as for hard drives well the odds of one crashing are the same wether they are internal or external and I dont really want to take that risk
