I'd guess that in Thailand, after the economic hell they've been through with the tsunami aftermath, people would look at a fish like that as a gift from whatever deity they worship. I've known a few Thai over the years, their list of acceptable cuisine is a lot longer than ours is. Fried cobra is a delicacy over there.

Oh.. I feel a little silly.. I didn't realize that catch was in Thailand. I should have read the whole article a little bit better.
I am sure every inch of that fish from the bones to the eyes to the gills will be put to good use. It will feed a lot of hungry people.. my apology.

If this were caught in some lake in the U.S., I would hope the fisherman would set it free, in the hopes that someone else might someday to also catch it and set it free. and so on and so on..

I guess I am particularly sensitive because the fishing waters off Miami don't see the numbers of sailfish we used to. Too many people were taking em in for pictures and bragging rights. Now it is pretty standard, boat captains won't take the fish in unless it is going to be stuffed or eaten. And by tagging the fish with electronic devices, it also helps for researchers to know how, where, etc. the fish population is doing etc..
