Don't pump gas on May 15th !!!

This is what I received in my email:

NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
Don't pump gas on may 15th
Body: ...in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices.

Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On
May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take
$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companys pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree (which I can't see why you wouldn't) resend this to all your contact list.
With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

Got an email about that 2 weeks ago.

Duh. Whoever thought this up obviously didn't take Econ in college. :dunno:

If you drive on 05/15, you're still going to gas up at some point in time to replace the fuel consumed. Whether you pay on that day or you pay another day, you're going to pay at the pump. The impact to the gas companies will be minimal.

A greater impact would be felt if there was a moratorium on driving for 1 day but that ain't gonna happen.

This is a hoax, please just let it die.

Yup... I can't believe this one keeps getting dredged up.

Hey, maybe if we all hold our breath so we don't produce any CO2 for five minutes, we can solve global warming... blah blah blah.

Thinking back to April 1997 ...

Still thinking.....

Nope, don't remember gas prices dropping 30 cents overnight.

Only people that these gas-outs would hurt are the independant gas station owners. Big Oil could care less. You'd have to have everyone stop using gas for a lot longer than a day to have any effect on them.

AzNMpower32 05-03-2007 08:12 PM

Highly doubt it will work. Law of supply and demand works in the oil companies' favor. Even if you don't fill up on the 15th, you'll have more than the normal amount of people filling up on the 16th and 17th, offsetting any "loss" that might be incurred. Plus, there's also something in Economics about how price increases occur rapidly but price decreases are delayed and slow to occur (sorry, it's been a year since I studied it)

Plus, the notion of a 30 cent overnight drop in gas prices is rubbish. More likely a 30 cent overnight increase due to some political instability.
