Laptop options

My brother in law wants a laptop for his 40th birthday. He's just going to use it to check emails and go on the internet, stupid stuff. My sister is clueless where to start and you KNOW I'm no help. Any suggestions?

BTW - I did seach laptops first, there's alot of threads to look through  My attention span isn't that long.
TIA :)

I like Sony computers, since my desktop has been very reliable for the past couple years. Hence, I got a Sony Vaio laptop for college. Lotta neat features and it looks nice. I suppose you could get a Mac since that seems to be all the rage among kids my age thesedays.

Thanks all,
I'll give her this info. It's a good place to start. :)

VAIO SZ is what I use at the moment and it's a nice laptop with a very nice screen, albeit on the flimsy side. If you're looking for reliability/durability there is nothing better than a thinkpad t series, imo. That is unless you're looking into the panasonic toughbook line!

Lenovo or Mac!! Please don't get a Sony..they make nice tv's but the laptops are nothing but good looking junk.

Lenovo (aka IBM Thinkpad) is my recommendation

Great computer but you can get a lesser window PC for less money.

That is definitely a fact. She didn't mention a budget though ;).

Goodman 06-21-2007 08:33 PM

Just like getting a Volvo instead of a BMW;)

Lenova Thinkpad, T series. Robust, reliable. We have thousands at work, currently T42, T43, and T60. I bought a T60 for my daughter last weekend for university.

If you don't want to spend that much, go as cheap as you can and consider it disposable.

:iagree:
Also, you said that he needs it for just checking e-mail and going on the internet - not much point paying more for options and upgrades that he will never need.

Lenovo is the best laptop for business, but $$$. I had a X60T and sold it to get the newer X61T (Santa Rosa chipset).

If he is just a light user, get a Compaq! Should last a long time and a great value. Also the lighter the better.

I do think the Apple has a pretty unit, but a learning curve for that old man over 40. Ha! I am 45...

Quicksilver 06-22-2007 12:35 PM

Age is not a factor. And the learning curve? very easy........

I have:

Dell (XP), HP laptop (VISTA), MacBook Pro and iMac (both OS X 10.x). There is a learning curve with a Mac, regardless of what is said, if you are use to a Windows style system. Things are simply different. That said, you can pick it up very quickly so that should not be a primary concern. However, if you like specialized software..you may want to check for Mac compatibility.
