Don't buy BMW with an auto!!
According to consumer affairs, any BMW with an automatic transmission is the 3rd worst car you can buy pre-owned :driver: .
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news0...used_cars.html "Buy a second-hand BMW with automatic transmission at your own risk." I like all the factual, scientific empirical data and the exhaustive list of all the BMW models affected, years affected, etc. Apparently, they don't like Toyota's reliability either  |
3rd worst drivers

Seriously, manual is the preferred way to go in a BMW. |
true that...all the jerking and the adaptive auto transmission just does not cut it for me... manual is the way to go
|
Can anyone say what percentage of BMW's come to the U.S. with auto slushboxes? Isn't it like 90%?

I always 'manually' put my auto trans in drive.....

I want to know why vehicles like the pontiac grand am, chrysler sebring, oldsmobile anything, jeep liberty, range rover, touareg, etc etc. To generalize a manufacturer in it's entirety like BMW is just an unjustified bias. |
Here are the details for the consumer affairs article:

I wish the X5 4.8is came in a manual trans.. I'd buy one in a heartbeat..

We also don't know how the cars were driven or maintained. BMW recommends that most fluids not be changed until 100,000 miles but who in their right mind would listen to such advice. I have about 45,000 on the clock and recently had the transfer fluid, trans fluid as well as front and rear diff. fluids replaced with synth. Although there's no guarantee, good maintenance can go a long way.
