What's a good laptop these days???

Seriously... I work with computers and IT every day, yet I'm so out of the loop as to what is a good laptop. Everyone claims Dell went to crap and I refuse to ever purchase Gateway or Compaq. A nice hd 15 - 17" screen would be nice, 2GB of memory since Vista is a pig, 100+gb hard drive (we need someplace to put that pron... oh wait, that's my desktop), a nice vid card and sound. I doubt serious games will ever be played on it. Heck, I haven't even sat down at my desktop in ever to do some serious gaming.

Someone wants a pink Vaio from best buy right now, but I'm leary about the Sony Vaio. So what say you oh people of the X5world lounge.... what the heck is a good laptop these days?

You know I have an HP and I really like it, my Compaq sucked and so did my Dell, but this HP Laptop was cheap, powerful and has been really durable

Apple MacBook Pro. It has either a 15.4'' LED screen, or an optional 17''. It is standard with 2GB memory. 120GB HD. NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics, and four built in speakers. All for $1999. Sounds like a winner

I'm anti Mac.... guess I should have mentioned that :) I'm also looking for the bargain laptop at no more than 1200 :D

I have a Sony Vaio SZ340 that my dad picked up from CDW I think. I liked Sony because my desktop has been so reliable for the past 3 years, I wanted another reliable laptop. Hence, Sony was an obvious choice.

If you want something solid and reliable go for a Thinkpad from Lenovo. They are not cheap but worth the price.

Get an ASUS. they make great laptops and they are good values. You can get lots of different preconfigured models at Newegg.com. Adding RAM is a snap. Just got my dad a new Asus and he loves it.

My friend is an IT guy and he purchases dozens of laptops each year. In his words "they all suck, but Dell don't suck as much as the others". He said all the laptops have lousy reliability and constantly have problems. I suppose it depends on how bad you abuse them though. I have a laptop, but it sits in my apartment and just simply gets moved around from room to room rather than taking the abuse that someone who travels often would give it.

+1 for Lenovo. Solid.
