I haven't heard of a reliable VW as of late. Just becase it's a diesel doesn't mean the radio won't stop working, the window seals start whistling, or the moonroof start leaking.
My pic in the small 'ute catagory is likely still the Mitsu Outlander. It's reasonably priced, looks great, not everyone and their brother has one, and it's got a split tailgate. I dunno, I just never really liked VWs.
I've driven a Golf (ok, the Rabbit) and that was........."okay". The 6-speed auto gearbox was good, but the brakes were spongy and something in the headliner towards the rear was loose so it rattled everytime I took it over rough pavement. The motor was mediocre and unsophisticated, with good midrange punch but subpar fuel economy. It does drive better than almost everything in its class though.
