This says something about the US.

I would have thought it would be higher, myself.

Did they poll on whether a candidate's gender affects your vote?

I'm sure it is higher. That's like asking people "are you a racist?". Undoubtably there are going to be those who answer "no" when the real answer is "yes".

I think Wagner is just surpised that 21% of people actually admit to being racist. I'm a bit surprised as well. I would have guessed it would be lower.

I would definitely have expected the number, who said that race affects their vote, to be higher. I went to CNN to see the poll to see if it was one of a whole bunch of questions. It's a single (unscientific) question on their home page. There's no real reason, that I can see, for racists to hide anything when answering the question.

As the the question is not worded "Would you not vote for a person based on that person's race?", I think the answers are open to some interpretation. I would also expect to see a similar response rate if the question was "Does a candidate's gender affect your vote?"...

Edited to add another comment: I don't think the internal U.S. race relations are any better or worse than other countries.
