Anyone gone from X5 to Acura MDX?

The lease on my 2005 X5 3.0 is up in April. I loved everything about the X5. Never went back to the dealer except for scheduled maintenance.

I love the look of the new X5, however, the price is an issue. Additionally, I think I just need a change.

Has anyone gone from an X5 to an Acura MDX? Please let me know your thoughts.

(Haven't posted much here in recent months, but love this forum.)

Not sure but there is a member here who has a E70 X5 and the new MDX.

I also know that one member went from a first-gen MDX to an E53 X5, loved it, and now has an E70.

I did it....The ACURA MDA has no mechanic flaws and does not break...the X5 is great in bed and acts like every crazy "X" you have ever had so you have to figure out if it is what is worth more to you....road feel and fun or long term reliability.

What I'm still looking for is some detailed feedback from someone who went from an X5 (E53 or E70) to a 2007 or newer MDX. Most of what I read was from people cross shopping (usually for the wife and not themselves) and evaluating things like the size of the 3rd row, nav, etc.

Good information from X5FX, however the MDX is his wife's car.

I'm looking for some honest feedback from the drivers out there.

Anyone?

My dad drives an 05 MDX. And I've driven it many times..It is extremely reliable, and drives ...ok..Handling is average, (nowhere near on the level of the X, not even close) MDX is probably more reliable. But I need handling and appearance. Also overall, I think the X engine is far superior..

Think of it this way... Your budget and conscience tell you to buy the MDX because it's the better value and may be more reliable over 100,000 miles. BUT, most BMW drivers think driving is a verb, a thrill, not basic transportation. They want to occassionally push a car to the limit on turns, just because they can.

I want to have fun while I drive. I truly love driving and enjoy slinging the BMW around and having it ask for more. If you are anything like this, your decision has just been made.

How about you? Have you done the test drive at least 3 times......
What's your opinion?

The 2nd gen MDX drives much better than the 1st gen. So make sure you differentiate that in feedback. Here is a good review on 2nd gen MDX by Rangerfan

The new MDX is pretty sweet. Don't know how it drives but if it drives like an X it is a great deal.

I drove it once for a 15 minute test drive a few months ago when I took my wife's TL in for a service appt. I was impressed enough to research it as much as possible and consider it for my next ride.

It felt faster than by 3.0 E53. Handled well on my short drive. Steering feedback not as good as my X5. Loved the front seats. Not crazy about the looks, especially the front end.

I definitely will take it for another extended test drive soon. Cost no object I would be drving a new X5 4.8i. But I'm paying $15K/year just for high school and I gotta pick up a 3rd car now - so money is always a factor.

My wife has an 02 MDX but I have done some intensive driving in a newer MDX. Every time I take my wifes MDX in for service I get the new MDX as a loaner. It has all the bells and whistles of the new X5 and more. I don't really like the 10,000 buttons on the MDX and they went away from the touch screen nav to an idrive system like BMW.

They drive really nice and are much lighter than an X but it does feel like a Japanese car. Lots of plastic and very little styling on the interior but the new exterior is much more aggressive. I would not buy the one my wife has for me and most people I know that have on are female, except my brother. That's a whole different story. But the new ones are worth looking at. Good Luck.

I agree with most of that review. Now if they could redesign that ugly snout, and figure out how to provide better communication through the strering wheel...

^ Price as tested is about $10k less than a nicely equipped X5 3.0si. If it were $20k less, it'd be a nice bargain but only $10k more to jump from a luxury Honda to the BMW breed is not asking a lot in the grand scheme. I'd make the decision for an X5 every time.

Love the older generation MDXs can't stand the new body style I think its very ugly...I have driven both the E70 4.8 and a 2005 MDX, while the MDX is very nice there is no comparison to the E70.

My uncle in NY recently got one, fully loaded. We had also test driven it back in late Dec, just to see what it's like. The combination of the button-fest dash and some fairly cheap plastics inside (door handles are a good example) make it feel like a near-luxury car, not a luxury car. Setting up the Bluetooth and phonebook also proved exasperating for me. Just my 2 cents.
