HDTV Deals?
 

Disclaimer: Stupid non-TV knowledgable girl question below.

I'm moving in a month and wondering if I should take advantage of the current Super Bowl TV sales. Are the deals really worth it right now? Any recommendations? I'm thinking somewhere in the $1,000 to $1,500 range.

Best Buy has this one: Sony - BRAVIA 40" 720p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV for $1,199.99 :dunno:

That'll do well. But also make sure you have a good HD signal coming into your home when you plan to hook that baby up!

If you don't have to get it right now, I would say wait. Compared to the pre-Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving sales, the prices right now aren't that great. Just to give you an idea of how low prices went, we bought a Hitachi 50" 1080i plasma for $997 at Best Buy right before Thanksgiving and Circuit City had a sale on a Sharp Aquos 46" 1080p LCD $1299.

Imo, they will keep on eroding; I'd wait, Mich.

JoeSixPack is really feeling the econ and pinch.
Millions that were running out to buy this kind of
stuff the past year are reeling it in, imo.

Unless you need/want one tomorrow, I think it
will only get better, price-wise.

Ok, good! That's what I wanted to hear! I really don't NEED it right now...but I didn't want to miss out on any super mega deals or anything.

That is a very good TV and its 1080p.

yeah, we almost got that one, but opted for the larger screen and lower price. We figured 1080p would be overkill at this point since we don't game or have a bluray player and we mostly watch tv, which is max 1080i.

I just picked up a 46" Samsung 1080P LCD for about $1,300 last week with rebates etc. - retailed for 1650 a few weeks back and $2,100 a few months ago.
(Yeah, I know somepeople hate sam'junk' but I don't and the reviews on CNET/AVS forum were stellar.)

Prices have reached a good price point now IMO - decent technology for not bad price across the board.

Will they drop more? Undoubtedly yes, I paid over over $2G's for a 200MHz "top of the line" desktop about 10 yrs ago :rofl: :rofl: - how much would that be now even if you could buy it.

If you don't "need" it right now and a few $100 in savings is worth it rather than having it on the wall now then I would wait - prices on these are only going one way.

Michelle, when you DO buy, I'd strongly suggest you check out what Costco is selling. They have a good selection at very good prices, but best of all is if you decide you don't want/like it within 90 days, you can return it for a full refund, no questions asked. Other retailers give you a few weeks at most, and even then may charge you a restocking fee.

Often people go only with a low sale price at first, then soon find they want a better/larger/fancier model within a short time. With Costco's return policy, you can hedge your bets a bit, and return the set you discover you don't want after all, in exchange for a better set you DO want. Even if it's not from Costco.

And I agree - the HDMI signal will really show off what the set can do. Much better than any sort of RGB connection. Do your homework before you buy. It's an investment worth making. HDTV rocks!

The deals now pale in comparison to the deals you get around Thanksgiving. The rule of thumb I used when we bought our tv was if the sale price was close to 50% of the suggested retail price, then I thought that was a great deal. You might find slightly better deals online, but I prefer a brick and mortar store when making a big purchase since the process is a bit easier if you need to return a product that arrives defective.
