Anyone else ever have to do this???
After 2 days of travel I finally made it to the Duluth MN Airport. I had to drive a rental car from Minneapolis and when I pulled into the parking lot to put my stuff in my X I could NOT find my key. I have no idea where it went. I have an extra key in the X but how do I get in to use it??? After calling GEICO & BMW I found out I need to order a new key. This morning I called my nearest dealership 3.5 hours away and they will place an order for a key to get in the X on Monday. They will not send me a fully functional key but only a key to open the door since I can not fax them proof of the title and registration which are locked in the car. So, until maybe Tuesday when I get my new key sent to me I'm driving a P.T. loser rental car. Everyone learn from me and get one of those magnet key hider things and hide your key somewhere on the X or at least don't keep it in your X. Also make a copy of your title and current registration as they would not accept last years registration as proof of ownership.
Anyone know of another way to get in my X instead of waiting for the key??? |
Can't a locksmith pop an X open?
|
No, on the BMW USA website it states that will not work.

What happened to the plastic door key?

From the BMW USA Roadside assistance brochure...
Here is what the brochure states;
Lock-out service Your BMW is equipped with an advanced entry system, which cannot be bypassed by traditional locksmith methods without significant damage to your vehicle. BMW encourages you to always carry your spare wallet key separately from your other keys. However, in the event that you find yourself locked out, a simple telephone call to Roadside Assistance will help you get back on the road. A representative will help you to arrange towing service to the nearest BMW center. Related towing costs will be compensated up to $100 per incident. You – or the person driving your vehicle – are responsible for any expenses related to replacement keys. |
thts the first thing i did is put the wallet key where it belongs
good luck |

I read another post from someone in the same situation as you. One person was successful with a locksmith, but said that the locksmith used a door wedge and a really long coat hanger to pull the interior door handle. Sounds like that would be a little painful for the X. I think you did the right thing waiting. I know you are probably kicking yourself for this, but why was the spare key in the X? Chances are it will never help you there. Even if you are far away from home you can have it shipped to you overnight at worst. |
I can't understand why you would keep your spare key in the car not only that but your car documents.
Is there a legal requirement for you to do this in the US.? |

Spare key is in my wallet. The wife bailed me out the last time. And yes registration in the vehicle is required. Common question in California when stopped is "License, registration, and proof of insurance please. But the title needs to be in a secure place but not n the vehicle.
As far as getting into the vehicle is concerned, it has been posted that the X can be opened. PM me. |
Is the remote unlocking service provided if I don't pay for any type of "assist" program?
|
Not on the E-53

You really need to check into the title issue. I HIGHLY doubt it is required to be in your car and if not that needs to be locked up.
I'm sure this varies state to state........ but in Texas if it is found that a key was left in the vehicle the insurace company does not necessarily have to pay if the vehicle was stolen. |
You don't need to have your title in the car.
Why don't you fax them proof of insurance. The vin number will be on that. |
btw plastic key is called valet key not the wallet key

Bummer! Last thing you need after a bunch of traveling. Especially after the I-35 slog up from the cities in a rental.
FWIW, no state requires that you carry your title in the car. some states have a statement on the title somewhere that says 'keep this document in a safe place, not in your car' or something to that effect. The car is actually the worst place to keep it, if someone steals your car, they not only have your car, they have your title. Store it somewhere safe in your house, or in a safe deposit box if you have one. |

The plastic key will open the door and start the car. The only two things it will not do are open the door remotely or open the glovebox. If anyone is thinking that a plastic key will keep someone from driving off with your car, you are wrong about that. |
