Comcasr DVR or TiVo?
 

I want to get some kind of DVR function for our house? Do any of you have expreience with Comcast DVR? Im not that excited about TiVo, because you have to pay for the recorder, no dual-tuning, etc. I know that both have ade a deal. Sometime in the future, Comcast will be using TiVo software in their DVR's.

Look at Windows MCE. You may be able to upgrade your existing PC with tuners fairly inexpensively. HDTV is only supported for OTA.

Of course, this isn't an option if you're in the "advanced class" with a Mac system. No Tablet PC option for that set either ;)

IMHO TiVo can't be beat by any cable system's DVR.

I'm stuck with cable for the short term, but when our house is finished, I'm going the Directv route (I won't have access to cable at that point, anyway). Directv's TiVo box has a dual tuner.

I considered this, but we're getting Digital cable+Broadband for $60/mo. Unfortunately, Comcast is the only Broadband provider in my area.

Do you know who manufactures Comcast's set top boxes? is it Scientific Atlanta? you might be able to hook up a standalone tivo box to the SA box. Many Cablevision customers have done that on their SA boxes.

Some people have received Scientific Atlanta, but usually Motorola is the brand given to customers by Comcast.

We've got the DVR from our local cable company. Very satisfied. I don't know that it makes that much of a difference, does it? I mean, aside from the TiVo name, don't they all work pretty much the same and offer the same features? :dunno:

It doesn't matter who makes the cable box, they all have to provide a connection that a TV is compatible with; that is how the likes of Replay and Tivo sell standalone boxes, they sit in the middle.

Going with what the cable company provides means you only pay one person, you can usually watch and record at the same time and if it breaks, they take care of it.

So if a tivo standalone is used, it sits between the regualr cable box and the receiver, or you need to have a dvr from the cable company and have a tivo standalone? How many times would I have to pay the DVR fee? btw, with Comcast, the monthly fee is $10. No other costs.
