Getting a new car, don't know what to get!

So my parents are finally convinced that I am not going to crash my car or lose my license so it is time to get a new car. I feel absolutely lost with no idea of what to get, I live up in the mountains so I want AWD/4WD, heated seats etc. but I also want it to be quick. I have narrowed it down to this list, which is absolutely jumbled and all over the place: around 50-60k range
-Used Range Rover Sport Supercharged
-New BMW 335xi Coupe
-Used Range Rover HSE
-New BMW X5 4.8
-Used BMW X5 4.8is
-Used Mercedes CLS500 (rwd)
-New Cadillac Escalade
-New Audi S5
-Used Audi A8
-Used BMW 7-series (rwd)
-Used Porsche Cayenne Turbo
-Used Lexus LS460 (rwd)
-New Jeep SRT-8
So which is the best?

Quicksilver 04-25-2008 08:26 PM

From your comments it appears your a young person. If that's true my suggestion is to show some wisdom and consider the following:

If your looking for an all-wheel-drive vehicle look no further than Suzuki's brand-new 2007/8 SX4, the lowest priced all-wheel-drive car sold in the U.S. This vehicle is priced at an astounding $14,999.

So if you crash it (which a lot of young people do starting out) Then your parents won't stress to much about the cost of repairing a high-line vehicle.

Yeah I know they may be able to afford it but IMHO at your age spending 50-60k for a vehicle isn't good judgement especially if you had to convince them you were not going to crash it.

racerboydrew 04-25-2008 08:50 PM

Well this will be car number 3, first a dodge durango, then a BMW X5 4.4, now one of these. The progression is basically earning the next car by maintaining good grades and a clean driving record along with a clean car.

New BMW 335xi Coupe

Audi S5 is very hot

primetime 04-25-2008 09:34 PM

Stay away from used Range's...they break...alot... i say go for the new 4.8..

MrLabGuy 04-25-2008 09:37 PM

Blow your parents minds and go with Quicksilver's advice. The feeling you get buying your own luxury or performance car with your own money is 100X that of having your parents buying you one.

Showing your parents you are responsible and realistic...Is priceless.

screw that.... take their money and run :)

dr.jay 04-25-2008 10:07 PM

WTF a Suzuki?? Did you see his list?, If the rents are buying go for the gusto I'd shoot for the 335xi or the 4.8 X5.

  • Range Rover
  • X5

X5audi 04-26-2008 01:35 AM

Audi S5. When I saw that car I literally couldn't stop staring. I almost followed it. It's absolutely gorgeous, blows the 335xi out of the water, and I didn't think that would happen. Quite possibly the most beautiful car for under $100,000.

However, the A5 may be a smarter choice for you, especially because 5.9 sec is quick enough is it not?

tomo63 04-26-2008 03:23 AM

What a wish list.
The thing is, you say you need a 4x4 so why are the Merc,Lexus,335,S5,A8,7 Series & the SRT-8 listed?
A car that you've overlooked which is right under your nose is an X3. If you like the X5 then the X3 is perfect. Cheaper to run, same build quality, great engines & a 4x4. Seems a shame not to concider it.

Is Audi still having problems with the V8?

Only the Lexus LS460, Mercedes CLS500, and the 7-series are RWD. Everything else is either 4WD or AWD. I go to school at CU Boulder but my family is from Breckenridge so I do drive up there in the winter to go skiing and visit. I have been to countless "safe" driving school along with the American Driving Academies formula driving school, so I now have an SCCA license. The AWD would just serve as a nice feature and also be a nice insurance cut since the policy will say it is a mountain car. They are not actually buying this car outright, it is going to be a 36 month lease that will end right around my college graduation, at which time I, like my brother and sister before me, will receive a new car. Out of the list I have been getting feedback from my friends that the A8, 7-series, and LS460 are not the right image for an 18 year old; I believe their words were "70 year old man." I test drove an SRT-8, and it moves in a way something that weighs 5000lbs should not, but the ride is terribly harsh. The new S6 is hovering in the 70's, and same for the RS4 which is about 68-74k. Then miraculously I saw an amazing sight today; a Lexus IS-F and a Mercedes-Benz C63 all in one day. A new IS-F costs very similarly to any of these other cars to lease and lists for about 58k with great residuals; it is fast (416hp, 371ftlbs), luxurious (touch screen nav, heated/cooled seats, Mark Levinson Sound), comfortable (smooth 5.0 V8, 8-speed automatic, deep bucket seats), and other than the strange bulge in the hood it looks the part. I would say same goes for the C63, but it seems a bit over the top and slightly chintzy on the interior; not to mention an even more inflated price tag.

What problems? I have the 4.2 in my S4, it's been absolutely trouble-free. Apparently, the 2.7T engine in my outgoing A6 was a well-documented lemon, but I never faced any reliability issues with that either. I have never heard of any problems with the V8, though.

I stand by my statement that the A5 would be a smarter choice. I also agree with whoever mentioned the X3. Those two should probably be your top choices; they're both quick, easy to drive, stylish, well-built and generally reliable.

It wasn't a reliability problem it was a supply problem. At the end of last year until about the beginning of March of this year, Audi was having a supplier problem with its V8 engines which delayed delivery of S5's among other models.

My uncle has had nothing but problems with the B5 S4 engine...

Be patient.... Get the 2009 E70 with the twin-turbo V8 and the newly redesigned 4 wheel drive system that currently lives in the X6.

Hey, for that matter, what about an X6????

What is the story on the redesign 4 wheel drive system, will it also be on the 2009 335XI?

I agree.. i think the best cars for an 18 yr old is the S5 or 335xi (what?? an 18 yr old??).

2006 4.8...

Stay away from Range Rovers - everyone i know with one has tons of issues. Ford.

X6 - not a bad idea at all..

And wait.. this is just a lease, and after u finish college, instead of buying it at end of lease, you're getting another new car? Are they adopting?

nunavut 04-29-2008 09:24 PM

Sign me up for adoption! I'll even contribute my salary to pay for rent in the house!

I'm a Rover lover first, but like everyone else said, I'd stay away from them for now. Unless you want to get an older RR that had the engine built by BMW. I've got a Discovery 2- I off-road it a lot, but it's always got something wrong- and always a nice puddle under it at one point or another.

I like the A5/S5 or the 335XI. Get a drop top!

I was in a similar situation when I was a bit younger, my parents helped me out a lot with my purchase and feel very blessed.

Godspeed in your search!

kuku4x5 04-29-2008 09:44 PM

1+ for s5... it looks better then the 335xi, the 4.2 v8 sounds a hell of alot better then it, and the quattro all wheel drive system works better then bmw's

trueX5er 04-29-2008 10:06 PM

335xi/S5

I would be hesitant on ground clearance though...

racerboydrew 04-30-2008 05:16 PM

I test drove the new IS-F and it sort of felt like the interior was made for a little kid, all of the buttons and gauges were tiny and it seemed claustrophobically small inside. The S5's are so hard to get here in Colorado I talked to the dealer and they said they have only had one hit the showroom and it was there for two days before someone got it, all of the others have been orders and I guess a list is beginning to form. The bmw engine land rovers have a much superior drivetrain but the electronics are much more glitchy as is the suspension which is always a big problem. The X6 is hideous in my opinion, but it could grow on me like the cayenne eventually did. lol, no they aren't currently looking I think after four kids they have had enough. I am very grateful they are doing this for me, I am grateful for everything they have done as a matter of fact. Ground clearance isn't too bad of a problem, the snow plows in Breck are on top of their shit so the roads never have too thick of a layer on them. My mom has a C4 and my dad had a porsche TT and it was never a problem. The S5 is far more attractive than the 335 in my opinion but the lack of some form of power boost is a deterrent, up at eisenhower tunnel there is a large lack in power in naturally aspirated cars. I am going to say I like the idea of the land rover range rover sport supercharged still though.

racerboydrew 05-03-2008 02:40 PM

I have decided on the 335xi coupe and getting a Vishnu PROcede Stage 1 Chip. 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. We are trying to track down a metallic black with red leather and all the options.

Ajogu 05-03-2008 03:15 PM

Good choice. I was going to say 335xi or S5. I would get the car first and see if you need the chip. 0-60 in 4.2 secs is pretty fast. I think you might have traction issues. Good luck.

With the parents paying why not get all the options and the chip, no sense of just driving a slow and basic BMW 335.

skippybigballs 05-03-2008 03:59 PM

Good selection

4 Attachment(s)
Good selection of motors in mind, but NO Q7.:yikes:
If i had the choice and money id be going for the AUDI Q7 or the 4.8is anyday:wow:

X5audi 05-03-2008 05:47 PM

Why do you need the chip? Ajogu is probably right in that you'll have traction issues with a vehicle that quick in heavy ice/snow, AWD regardless. Isn't 0-60 in 4.9 fast enough?

The parents are paying no reason to conserve.

A good kid would conserve anyways. I do so, even though my parents pay for a lot of the stuff (including the wheels on my X3  ). I always feel a bit guilty splurging too.

X5audi 05-04-2008 12:40 AM

^Guilt. Exactly!

Not to mention, are your parents making the best decisions? I wouldn't buy my kid a car that quick, ever. It's just unnecessary. I would hesitate before pulling the trigger on a "standard" 335xi, much less one with a Vishnu chip.

:iagree:
I would have taken a car like that in a heartbeat at that age, but even with the drivers education the OP has had he is still very young and bound to make a few dumb decisions in a car as fast as a 335i, let alone with added boost. Be careful with it.

JayX5 05-04-2008 01:33 AM

Cayenne Turbo!!!

E61Silver 05-04-2008 02:28 PM

I here that RR is coming out with a new smaller model, maybe next year you can trade the BMW for the RR or the new 7.

X5audi 05-05-2008 12:09 AM

^Don't encourage... Why does he need a 7, or even worse, a Range Rover? Or were you joking? I don't even want a car that big.
