Due to the massive relief efforts going on down south, I thought it could be helpful to start thread for donation links and phone numbers. We are all very fortunate to have the things we have, and live like we live. However, our fellow Americans are experiencing loss that we cannot imagine, and hardships that many will never recover from.

If you have some donation links or numbers please reply and add to the list. I'll start with this article and list I got from FEMA. If you have a few spare nickels, please consider giving to one of the relief efforts. What is more important that helping to preserve human life?

Cash Sought To Help Hurricane Victims, Volunteers Should Not Self-Dispatch

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Voluntary organizations are seeking cash donations to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina in Gulf Coast states, according to Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response. But, volunteers should not report directly to the affected areas unless directed by a voluntary agency.

“Cash donations are especially helpful to victims,” Brown said. “They allow volunteer agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs. Cash donations also allow agencies to avoid the labor-intensive need to store, sort, pack and distribute donated goods. Donated money prevents, too, the prohibitive cost of air or sea transportation that donated goods require.”

Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food.

“We’re grateful for the outpouring of support already,” Brown said. “But it’s important that volunteer response is coordinated by the professionals who can direct volunteers with the appropriate skills to the hardest-hit areas where they are needed most. Self-dispatched volunteers and especially sightseers can put themselves and others in harm’s way and hamper rescue efforts.”

OK, I am back online! :D

House is fine. A couple of small tree limbs fell in my yard, otherwise no damage at all! Of course, after hurricanes Ivan and Dennis, you could say I have had quite a bit of pruning in the past year.

My only issue was the lost of electricity and cable TV/internet service for ~24 hours. Just got it all back a few minutes ago. I will be installing a generator soon. :zoom:

So many people to my west have suffered devastation. Those of us in my area can sincerely empathize, since we have not yet gotten over the recent prior hits. Any donations or assistance you can render those in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana would be a good thing.

Glad to hear you did not suffer losses like your neighbors to the west! It just seems to keep getting worse by the hour.

It will be interesting to see if this country responds in the same way that we did to the Tsunami. May not be the same death toll, but it is a serious blow to be sure.

I am going to set up a matching contribution from my company, and I'll match donations individuals may alread have made, if they can show me they did it.

On another message board last summer, it was suggested to me that we Floridians deserve this treatment for living here in teh first place, and that the Federal gov should have no involvement in disaster relief for that reason.

Nobody, but nobody, deserves this. This is a first order catastrophe for our fellow Americans.

Glad to hear you are OK doc. I have a good friend who's a doc in Baton Rouge, who has secured a generator to reopen his practice tomorrow. He expects to work a lot of long days and weekends in the weeks ahead. At times like this, I wish I had gone to med school, so I would feel like I said something real to contribute to the effort. God Bless those of you who do.

It is hard to feel sorry when you see the local asswipes stealing TV's, looting dead people's houses, and pillaging beer, Nike's and smokes by the shopping cart full. I just heard the people we are trying to save just shot a female police officer and the chopper pads are covered with thugs with M16s! Now the evacuation from the Superdome is halted due to the riotous atmosphere.

But still, a lot of help is needed outside of those dumbasses who should be shot. I hope you will join me in giving to the Red Cross or some official relief effort and not let the thugs ruin the nation's willingness to help out.
